So I carry a Kimber mako as my EDC I own a Rock Island 1911 .45 . I am looking for a range gun thinking 9mm just because of price of ammo. I’m not brand loyal I was thinking of an Sig but I see other brands listed as well that intrigue my interest. Wondering what others use just for range.

Need more info. What do you like? What budget? Polymer or metal hammer fired? I would go to a range with a variety of rental handguns and shoot a bunch. Something will likely stand out.

I have several and in 9mm am a fan of CZ as I like how they feel and point in hand. A favorite SA/DA and also great home defense pistol is my CZ 75 SP-01. In a polymer striker fired I also use for action shooting competition is a lightly modified CZ P-10 F.

A 1911 in 9mm is also a lot of fun at the range. I have a commander size Tisas and it punches well above its price point. A government size with a steel frame in 9mm is like shooting a cap gun :)

YMMV

What is a range handgun as compared to other handguns? Regardless of size, chambering, action type, or any other factors, all my handguns are range guns because I shoot them regularly at the range.
A range gun to me is one I will only shoot at the range. Does not do HD or carry duty. May be a couple of reasons. I am currently building a single action only CZ 75 B. It will get Cajun gun works parts, firing pin block delete and a few other goodies. Target SA trigger pull is around 2 lbs or less. This will be an accurate go fast gun. But will only be shot at the range (and possibly competition).

As stated before range gun I might put optics on it will go to the range only. I shoot my Kimber every other trip but I want full size for strictly range. I’m thinking about a bundle from Acedemy but I like the ideal of a bigger gun Cz had been creeping into my mind several brands not named Glock have to be honest I would like to ke below $700

These are easy to shoot well and can be had for right at $500 new.
Holosun makes a direct mount RDS or plates for most footptints are around $50-80

S&W M&P 9 with a 5" barrel, Grand Power Q100 (striker) or K100 (hammer), any Canik TP9 model with a 5" barrel, Springfield XD Tactical, RIA STK 100 for weirdness.

Generally I’m a Glock guy and my G19 would be my recommendation for most people’s first pistol and mine is the last gun I would hold on to if I had to pick just one. That considered I’d recommend a PX4 Storm if you can find one $400 or under. It has an interesting rotating barrel locking mechanism and mine has been a great shooter so far. If you check out some Langdon Tactical videos he has some good information regarding the durability of the PX4 as well as potential upgrades. I’m considering sending mine in.

I’m always amazed how many people will recommend polymer duty pistols for full size range guns. In fact, some even recommend compact polymer duty guns.

Not sure what the deal is, but hopefully the OP gets himself a great shooter instead.

My choice is the CZ Shadow 2. The Delta Point Pro isn’t really necessary. But the optic sure makes 100 yard hits on steel a lot easier.

If the full size Shadow is too big, the Compact is just about as accurate. And you could possibly carry the Compact.
