I have Model 29 Classic with 6.5 barrel and full underlug serial #BKF44xx that I bought used from a LGS. I think it was made in early '90s. Does the full underlug date a 29 to a specific period of mfg? I recently saw a Mod 29 for sale on Gun Broker with a full underlug that was made in 1987 as a Lew Horton limited edition. I have always liked the look of the full underlug on a 6-plus barrel. I remember back to 1982 when I bought my first new handgun. It was a blued 6 inch Model 586. I fell in love with the full underlug barrel. It cost me less than $300 with tax and I believed it was every bit the equivalent of a Colt Python in looks and performance. When I had the chance to purchase a 29 with the full underlug I jumped at it.

Late 1987 was when the first N-frame full-lug was married to the 44 Magnum.

It was only known as the Mystery Magnum until the You Name It contest.

The "Classic" moniker denotes that a 29/629 has a full underlug barrel.
Although it don't really make sense to me that the newer full-lugs are called the Classic.

And then there is the even more recent Classic Series/Classics half-lug 29's to add to the confusion...

S&W has never been known for having a model number or naming system that was completely coherent. Adding "Classic" to the name of a traditional revolver to indicate it is a new design and then there was the numbering system for pistols beginning with the second generation pistols, which had only three digits, yet the compact pistols did not follow the structure of the full size pistol number system.
