Fullfilled one of my automotive dreams

All of these Mustangs and S&W's... I'm getting ferklempt. Such good people here. Thanks for the pics to everyone who posted them up. Mustang porn.

I'm a big '70 Boss fan. The +05 Mustangs are, imho, the near-perfect melding of the original and modern design cues. The 2010 model is even nicer. The 5-liter engine returns in 2011. Ford has done a fine job with the Mustang.

Thanks for the pics Barb. No it's not the SOHC.I didn't think they went in the 'Stangs. But when you mentioned NASCAR I thought about the SOHC,It was outlawed from stockcar racing for some (fuzzy memory) reason.
Anyways thanks again for sharing your husbands pride and joy (other than you!) with us.
D.G.

The SOHC was outlawed because it was trying to compete with Chrysler's Hemi. NASCAR got scared that the whole thing was getting out of hand, and put a stop to OHC engines trying to compete, and it's been that way ever since. Ford has not built an OHV V-8 in years, but all their NASCAR engines are constructed that way. Until a short while ago, they were all still based on the old Cleveland tooling. One day NASCAR may wake up and smell the coffee and allow OHC engines, but I doubt it's gonna be anytime soon.

Here's my baby, it's an original 68 gt that was bought and used as a drag car in 1969. It spent the next 15 years going 1/4 mile at a time and was then put out to rust behind the speed shop that raced the car. Restoration was started in 1999, here she is now, with the odometer at 8196 original HARD miles.

Great restoration!! She's a beauty!

Very poor pic I know, but it's the only one I have of that Boss 302....

Yes. The original Shelby's had a 428 but this one has a 427 Cobra Jet NASCAR engine. This is a 1968-1/2 Shelby 500KR.

That's all I know about it. It's my husband's car. He's had it 30 years.

Just quoted that because the 427 was never a cobra jet... in that year the CJ was only the 428... a 428 with a 427 top end.
Old school ford guys tend to get skin crawls when the wrong term is used to describe one of fords FEs. ;)
I have always been a Galaxie guy, built a 65 with a 454... bored 427 block and 428 crank... with a high riser top end, but thats a purty pony ya have there.

It's a 427 "side oiler" with 428 Cobra Jet heads on it. It came from the factory with a 428 Cobra Jet. For that year, it was a 428 with 428 Cobra Jet heads. It did not have a 427 top end on it. The 428 Cobra Jet heads were completely different from the 427 heads.

That's a direct "asked the husband" quote.

He would like to know, "Why did you bore the 427? And if you put the longer stroke 428 crank in it, that would have brought up the cubes. How far did you bore it?"

If there's one hobby I enjoy more than shooting it's cars, here's the '69 GTX I've owned since '82. The engine is still the numbers matching 440 though it's been modified with all kinds of go fast goodies. The trans is a column shifted 727 with a 9" converter, manual valve body and a slew of internal modifications. A set of 4.10's out back make it pull like a freight train. This year it was featured in the July '09 issue of Car Craft magazine.

The photo is from the Frankensteiner's Ball Halloween show...

My other old car is a '37 Packard 115C, stone stock with 45K on the odometer.

Love the story and all the pics, you're lucky to have gotten to drive that Boss. Some of my best car memories are of cars I drove but didn't own and even of rides in cool cars when I was a kid, before I had my license - a neighbor's '64 Vette roadster, a Bricklin SV1 (one of the few 4spd versions), Jag XKE, Porsche Turbo Carrera - the stuff of dreams back then.

Over the years I've owned my share of sports and muscle cars, some of them petty cool, but my favorite was my '67 Plymouth GTX. I got it back in '79 for $1400 and it hadn't even turned 50K on the odometer yet. I had to sell it a couple of years later, I heard it got t-boned by some old lady in a big Mercury. Anyway, imagine my surprise a couple of months ago when I hooked up with an old friend that still had the pics he took of my GTX way back when! Took me right back to being 17 when they popped up on the screen, the interweb is a wonderful thing!

Well, I don't have pictures yet, but next weekend I go to pick up my first Ford. 1933 Ford 2 door 3 window coupe with all steel and a v8. Only way I could afford this prize was by being a friend of their family. I will post pics as soon as I take them. YeeHawwww

Speaking of Galaxies, I've always loved the 1969 XL model that had the little known GT package. They had the Sportsroof body style, most had a 429 with bucket seats and a horseshoe shaped shifter in a floor console. Many also had the mag simulated wheel covers and a reverse "C" stripe down the side in a contrasting color to the car. Some were factory four speeds. Don't see many at all today, or find many folks who even knew they existed. I especially loved the concealed headlights that they had. Ain't even seen a good pic of one in years.

My first ride was a '69 Dart,340 wedge,4-door,sleeper.Buddy had '69 StingRay,350 c.i.,390 HP,180 AV gas and it would scream.Dad had '65 Polara 440,6 pack,ex cop car.Cousin had '69 Charger 426 hemi.
Best friend had a '72 Super Beetle.First road trip from Niagara Falls to Ft. Lauderdale,Fla,'77 'Spring Break'. This was maybe the best car?

The flathead 6 is winding pretty good by 45-50 mph so the '37 is a low speed operation, even on todays roads. Considering what roads were like back then, it was probably an even lower speed operation. What an adventure that road trip must have been.

Mustang Love...

I owned a 1969 302 coupe for eleven years, bought it in 1991, sold it in 2002 (I was the second owner)... wish I still had it!

My Daddy worked for Packard back in the 30's and during WW2. He was a Tool & Die maker, during the war he worked on the Rolls Royce Merlin engines. He used to tell me that he would walk through the second floor where they did all the custom bodied stuff. He also said that he used to put his books up on the machine at night to study, while he went to college during the day. He graduated from Wayne State in 41.
