GB Mod 18-4

Anyone see that 18-4 that had been round-butted and nickel plated on GB GB completed auction? I advised the seller that it wasn't original, he didn't seem to want to hear it, assuring me that it was. At the time of my interest it was going for less than $300. I asked about the round butt conversion (since the grips were obviously for a round butt), he sent me a photo of the butt and said it was a square butt. When I informed him that S&W didn't plate hammers or triggers, he replied that they had only been polished and that the plating was factory. Hopefully no one here got taken on it.

Franken gun for sure, the ejector rod is RH thread.

But, for $670, you got a $200 set of RB combats and a neat $470 trail gun, if your into stuff like that

True, the Combats do take some of the edge off, but I doubt this one will be the "prize of any Collection".

I like it and I don’t even like the Combats. I didn’t see it before it sold so how much I like it wasn’t tested, but it could have turned out to be the prize of my back yard shooter collection.

Don't get me wrong, I like it too. A round butt 18 with a good nickel plate job, what's not to like? The seller's attitude about being corrected was the biggest put off, and then the final price. With shipping and transfer fees, that gun is around $700. I was thinking more along the lines of $475-500 and recouping some money off the Combats. I just hope someone didn't pay that much thinking it was original.

Well it is obvious that you have not had good results buying off of GB auctions. Oh I forgot--you are not an idiot. Maybe you have not bought anything from GB.

I have made several satisfactory purchases from GB and I am not an idiot as you describe someone who deals with GB.

There are several sellers on this forum who sell on GB and are good to deal with. There are lots of good sellers on GB. Doing the research on what you are interested in and communication is of utmost importance.

I did not aim to hijack this thread but some people comment when they don't know what they are talking about.

Not all Gunbroker buyers get taken. Know your guns. Inspect the photos carefully, ask the seller questions, check the site often, wait for deals....

I apologize for not wording my opinion of GB more kindly. However, it's been less than 24 hours since the end of what Sesame Street proclaimed was “National Grouch Day”, so you should have expected a little grouchiness to linger. [See yesterday’s thread on that topic.] I in turn should have predicted an adverse reaction from GB sellers. I did buy lots of “stuff” off GB including one 686 and watched many auctions so my opinion isn’t based on nothing. Worded a little less grouchily, there are exceptions to everything, but GB is not the value conscious shopper’s friend.

I have bought and sold many guns on GB and so far all the deals have been good buying and selling. That doesn't mean I couldn't ever get a bad deal but I do really check out the item and ask questions. When selling I post high quality pictures that are high resolution and offer a 3 day non shooting inspection period.

The main problem some people have is they don't set limits on how high they will go when bidding on an item and sometimes the spend to much and maybe have buyers remorse. It probably doesn't help either if they have had a few drinks before they start bidding.

It's like any other auction site as people pay to much on EBay from time to time as I had a store up there for a few years and sometimes people bid things up to full retail.
