Gen 3’s are Coming back !

I don't care that much about the guns. But, if I can have a new source of 4506 mags I'll be in hog heaven.

As long as we are dreaming, I'd like to see carbon steel versions of a couple of models. A blued Model 1006 (Model 1005 ?) would be one handsome pistol. They should also have the slide milled for some type of optical sight that could be easily mounted by removing the standard rear sight and not require any gunsmithing.

But I remain skeptical that we will ever see any.

I'm afraid this must be wishful thinking. Personally, I sold all my Third Generation guns in favor of yes, plastic pistols that are lighter and have more capacity.
Although I did admire my 3913 LS and thought it was among the most elegant of designs, I can't really justify firearms that I use daily based on looks or an emotional attraction. Nor can I imagine there would be a market for 3G pistols in light of the competition like the SIG P365XL, my current carry gun.
The sad truth is that there would be very little market for something like a 908 or even a reborn 3913 these days except for members here, who remember the good old days of 1988 when these pistols were indeed a wonderful design.

Edited to ad this undated advertisement, just for nostalgia:

I am guessing we would also hear the newer generation complaining that "they are heavy" compared to the plastic offerings.

wyo-man

Yes they are heavy... but that is so when you run out of ammo you can club your assailant to death with your pistol.

I am a big fan of the 3G pistols, they were and are probably still the best made pistol ever built from the factory. And for the money they are a great deal considering what you would pay for a comparable pistol even in yesteryear's market. It's a shame that you have to spend upwards of 2K to get that quality of gun today.

If Smith ever did reintroduce this platform you can bet that it would be north of 1200 bucks if built to original spec. You just can't wear one of them out, they just keep going and going...

A new 3913 made to the old standards with parts support for, well...the rest of my life, anyway...priced at $1200...I'm in!

I spent close to $800 for a new-old-stock 5946 that popped up two years ago. I'm an absolute sucker for metal pistols, and the third-gens looked, felt, and shot incredibly well. They won't replace polymer wonders anytime soon, but to have a premium metal line of pistols from S&W again would be fantastic.

I want to believe. The existence of the CSX and the metal frame M&P shows S&W isn't completely done with either metal frames or hammer fired, and FN DID make new Hi-powers. But I'll believe it when I see it.

I hope they bring them back, I'd be a buyer. Same Gen 3 guns, with a little increase in mag capacity would be nirvana.

That totally explains why I still have a 5903, 6906, CS-45, and CS-9. I'm satisfied with the magazine capacity and I never have to hope that S&W makes them again or have to believe rumors like the one in this thread. :D

Well, it sure would be nice. Seems like there's been a renewal of interest in older models, with the Python coming back, etc. I just saw this morning how many of the current wave of gun purchases are for personal protection. More options in the market, especially something that makes the line of pistols pop out from the pack - like metal-frame pistols and maybe even revolvers - can only be a good thing.

In 2012 someone at the S&W pro shop leaked a picture of the Shield which was to be introduced the next day.

That person was fired, pro shop and range wer both closed to the public.

I'd be shocked to find that someone in CS had pre release information and told even a dealer.

Releases like these are huge events for manufacturers. Lots of planning and coordination go into timing the release. A customer service worker who would let something like that slip would be shown the door in short order.

As long as you can find one anywhere that is not $300-$500 over retail when they first come out, which seems to be the trend the last couple of years.

Same here, 2 years ago found my 5946 with 3 mags (as you know mags fit a bunch of our gen 2's and 3's) in beautiful shape for $500.00...was excited just to see one...the DAO is incredibly smooth, and accurate overall and I love using it and even carrying it. thanks for posting yours!
