A performer who simply outclassed his contemporaries in the '60s. Though he performed decently on the charts he was too sophisticated for the teen rock n rollers of the time.
Listen to one of the truly great voices in popular music. Hold on and listen to the last 45 seconds or so. Gives me shivers!

During those days you had a few real musical talents around..Aaron Neville, Gene Pitney, Roy Orbison,Linda Ronstadt,Moody Blues,Neal Diamond, They stuck around for a long time.....Heck they stayed around to get old, just like the rest of us...Sadly a few left early. Orbison, Pitney, Aaron Neville and Ronstadt are still with us. There was some real talent around back in those days...Some are still kicking. Thank God...

everytime I hear a Gene Pitney song it reminds me of my first true love...we used to listen to him while parked out in the tulies necking...I didn't marry her...she sent me a dear John on my 1st tour in Nam...I met my lifelong true love after my second tour in Nam and married her 3 months later...they said it wouldn't last...we've been married 47 years and counting...

Gene Pitney....truely one of the very best. He holds the record of most top ten hits without a #1. I believe he died of a heart attack in London Maybe caused by the vioxx he was taking after hip replacement

Orbison and Pitney gone real sad. I guess because they were from my generation...Ronstadt is sick and will never tour again. I saw the Moody Blues in the Reno area in the early 80's I don't think they are doing the big time gigs anymore???? I remember Orbison doing the thing with all the great musicians in "Black and White" in some venue in So. California I think, He had a tragic personnel life, lost his family in a fire. Some of the greats from back then stayed successful. Some didn't. Growing up in that era was interesting to say the least. I was fortunate I got out of the Marines right after Bay of Pigs call up that didn't happen. I got to on with my life.The thing about getting old is the memories stay fresh, even though I can't remember where my darn car keys are most of the time.....I don't think you ever forget the music of the time...It is the connection that stays with you.

Orbison had that haunting falsetto voice that you never forgot, He was a musical genius. Many from those days were very good, some not. Roy Orbison was one of the best...Pitney made songs house hold words with out a number one..Yet look how popular he still was....

"Only the Lonely" was written because his wife or girlfriend died (forgot which). He had a helluva voice, smooth, with great range.

Pitney did stuff just a little different than the others of his time...not radical but just enough to make you want to hear more.

Roy Orbison's wife and children were all killed in a house fire while he was on tour.....

Actually his wife died as the result of a motorcycle accident and one of his sons died in a house fire. This according to google.

I guess I could have read it wrong..Thought they were all killed in fire..There was a tv special some time back, showed the house..very modern at the time...
