I stumbled across a George Herron #4 skinning knife over the weekend at a small fly fishing show and was fortunate to be able to add it to my collection. I've spent hours on the net trying to identify the scrimshaw artist with no luck. As shown in the photos, it's a nice rendition of a rainbow trout chasing a fly and signed "SD '81". The scales appear to be yellow Westinghouse micarta, but I'm not positive. I would appreciate any help identifying the artist.

The seller remembered buying it from A. G. Russell, but that was almost 40 ago and I have my doubts about his memory. He also had a Bill Herndon knife and had mixed up the sheaths between the two. The knives obviously didn't fit correctly, but he insisted that he bought them that way. Fortunately, I was able to convince him that they were mismatched when I pointed out the serial number on the tang of the Herron knife and showed him that each of the knives fit their respective sheaths perfectly.

I trust you'll enjoy the photos and I hope someone can help!

If he bought it already embellished with the Trout it may have been a Scrimsander that AG used some from Fayetteville, Arkansas. I am sorry I can not remember her name but pretty sure the initials are a match. She was very talented.

Had a Sting by A. G. and she scrimshawed a turn off the century police officer on one side and my initials on the other, carried it daily in my boot untill I lost it in a house fire in 93.

You may be thinking of Sandra Brady, who would be close, but no seegar.

Nice knife though. :)

A very nice knife. You are very fortunate to have found it and now have it in your possession. You may contact knifemaker, Wayne Hendricks. I believe he lives in Allendale,SC and was a student of George's. They were very close friends. George was a father figure to many and good and decent man to all.

I met Herron maybe three times when I was a knife writer and he impressed me as being a very talented, nice man.

The scrimshaw is good, but not exceptional. The handle scales were probably white Micarta that has darkened.

I'd call A.G. Russell and ask if he knows the artist. He knows a LOT about such matters.

If you don't already know, the blade shape is called a semi-skinner. I think Loveless originated that term. The steel is most likely 154CM.

Yes they have a great Store in Rogers Arkansas just beside the freeway.
You should stop in if you are ever in the vicinity.
Good website also.
