Got a Favorite Knife Maker?

My dad grew up in Holyoke, MA during WW2
This is where PAL knives were made
All but the third from top are WW2 PALs/

While stationed in Thailand (67-68) as an Air Force Flight Surgeon Tech.(Think Medic) I volunteered to serve in Civic Action (think Peace Corps) in a remote isolated village in N/E Thailand for a year. We were not allowed to have a weapon ( or wear a military uniform) for fear it would draw the Thai Communist insurgents to try and take it from us since many of them were still using crossbows and hand made rifles. So I purchased a "eye" brand stag handled bowie knife, made in Germany, from the BX after I lost my "buck" knife on my first trip into the boonies. I still have that knife and still use it after 54 years and it is razor sharp when sharpened properly. It was used for everything, butchering ducks, killing snakes, chopping down small bamboo. Cutting bandages. It handled everything. I have search the net looking for another one, but haven't found an exact match yet.
PS. I still amaze waitresses in Thai resturants when I order in Thai!

Benchmade or Spyderco in my pocket every day.
Custom knives, however, = industrial art at it's finest.

By length of time owned, I've had the Pukka since the mid 60's. It's my general purpose shop knife. The sheath knife is Kuzan Oda's from the time he was in Colorado and the folder is the only one he ever made. Other than these three, it's Benchmade automatics for me.

That puukko was designed by Tapio Wirkkala, a well-regarded designer, mostly for things other than knives. I bought mine out of the Brookstone catalog.

For fixed knives, my favorite is Nathan Carothers, Carothers Performance Knives. Best handles, unbreakable knives.

Jerry Busse's knives are too expensive for me, but I can stretch to afford his Scrap Yard Knives. SR101 steel and the very comfortable Reseprine handles. I have a few. One should be arriving today.

Ethan Becker's knives are manufactured by Kabar. Excellent and affordable.

I actually have a stag bowie knife by Eye Brand, Germany. Made circa 1983, I'm guessing. Looks like a Puma. Look at my prior posts. Good steel.

Late edit: Carl Schlieper Eye Brand (Puma clone)

Always had Buck knives and was generally happy with them.

When I got to the point where I could afford AND appreciate the better things, I became a Randall man.

Every year on my birthday I order up one. I lean towards the full tang models for hard work, however I am contemplating a severely customized pimped out #1 as a Barbecue Knife to go with the Barbecue Gun and holster.

These are just the three I had at hand. Each one has my name and the year I got it engraved on the blade.

My favorite two custom makers were Rod Chappel, unfortunately no longer with us, and Roger Russell, who retired many years ago. I like Randall, but consider them "semi" custom. Mineral Mountain Hatchet Works are great to deal with. For factory knives, I like the older Cold Steel and the knife I carry when camping, hiking, etc. is a good old fashioned Kabar.

I do have this beast and I mean that in the nicest way! Randall 12-8 bowie.
I've been told it's from the 90s. It is also for sale if someone is interested. 8" blade never sharpened in great shape :D

Marshwheeling, I have that exact same Finnish Pukko, bought via Eddie Bauer back in I think 1970 or so, with the leather sheath with the spit tip, and a belt loop made by a twisted leather thong. Takes an incredible sharp blade. I have since given it to my son, for his boys some day. Nice knives,

Had I known what a pristine example would be worth today, I would not have schlepped mine around in a motorcycle tank bag for 25 years. When I did find out, I withdrew mine from service.

I have a few knives which have been retired from daily carry and duty, because I have too many memories of them to tolerate loosing or damaging them. Like the Buck General and my 110 Folder, both carried and used in Vietnam and Desert Storm, and in other times. My issue Demo folder, and several Swiss Army knives, with camo grips. My sterile SOG sheath knife, my only Randall. My dad's issue WWII sheath knife. And of course, the Pukko in this thread. The Garand bayonet I got back in Boy Scouts.

I just ordered engraved Buck Ranger folders for my two grandsons, so when their dad thinks it is time, they will have them.

Enjoying this thread... SF VET

I am currently saving up to buy a Randall. It will be my first one. Carbon. 4" blade.
