German Made TPH

Ms. TPH, I'm sure Mike will fix you up. He used to work as a gunsmith for Interarms and is considered THE expert on troublesome Walthers. But be patient. He had my gun for about 6 months before he finally got it working. But it does work perfectly now. ;)

Mike had mine for 4 months, he did the best he could, but the DA is still unreliable.

Failures to Fire with:
CCI 36 grain CPHP Mini Mag rated 1255 fps,
CCI 40 grain Velocitor CPHP rated 1435 fps, and
Winchester 40 grain Wildcat CPHP rated 1300fps.

Failure to Eject with Subsonic:
CCI Standard Velocity 40 grain LRN at 1070 fps.

After I got the TPH back from Mike, I ordered and installed a Wolff Xtra Power Hammer Spring. But the DA pull is so heavy that I consider it unuseable.

I removed the XP Spring and ordered a new Trigger Bar, based on info in this thread:
Another TPH trigger bar question | Walther Forums

So far, the Single Action is great with the Wolff Standard Strength Hammer Spring. No Failures to fire in SA, and high speed loads eject very well.

Im still hunting for some high speed ammo w softer primers.. would prefer European, suggestions welcome ;-)

RWS makes some fine target ammo but most of it may be too slow for proper ejection, the fastest being 355 M/sec. I use their sub-sonic in my modified and suppressed Ruger Mk II. Have not tried it in the TPH.

I see RWS Ammo is available in USA, here:

I ordered some of their High Speed Copper Plated Round nose to test. Hopefully its case and rim dimensions will work better than CCI in my German TPH

I also ordered some Fiocchi 1250 fps to test.

Also waiting to receive the new Trigger Bar.. then head back to the range for some more ammo testing.

The Beretta 21A is the only reliable Pocket 22 auto I have found.

Agreed. It's the only one I still have and it's reliable with just about anything I put through it, including some subsonic loads. It does need to be cleaned and lubed though. It's not like the duty guns that will just keep chugging along. My 21A with a suppressor is a fun gun!

I've had two of the stainless TPH's over the years. The first one only liked Stingers and even then would struggle to get through a full magazine without issue. Sold it.

The second one was ok if you used most hotter stuff but standard velocity wouldn't work worth a damn. Sold it, at a healthy profit even.

When they first came out with the stainless, I was very excited.
When I finally got one of them, I tried it with every ammo I could find.
VERY finicky.
Polished everything I thought might help.
Still finicky.
Tried to hope it would get better with use, but several hundred rounds later I was so aggravated clearing jams it had to go away. ;)

Ditto....................

Decades ago when I worked at a LGS I got to handle a stainless TPH ( it was on hold for a LEO friend of the owner).

That was one of the few pistols that cut me--IIRC the slide edges were sharp as razors!

I bought the High Velocity RWS 40 grain cphp, the box is not marked for speed, but 355 M/sec is 1160 fps
I also bought Fiocchi 40 grain cprn rated 1250 fps.

The RWS Fails to Extract, almost every time.. not useable, its as bad as Subsonic CCI.

The 1250 fps Fiocchi had zero Failures to Extract, and just 1 out of 60 rounds Failed to Fire in double Action. This is with the Stainless Firing Pin and the Wolff Standard Strength Hammer Spring.

Just to make sure the Stainless Firing pin was helping, I reinstalled the stock blued Firing pin. Failures to Fire in Double action w the Fiocchi increased to 4 out of 50. Conclusion is the Stainless Firing pin, which is 1 gram heavier, works better to prevent Failures to Fire in Double Action.

At this point it is clear to me that any ammo slower than 1250 fps will Fail to Extract, and 40 grain works better than 36 grain.

From all the Ammo Ive tested in Double action, the CCI Velocitor 40 grain cphp at 1435 fps, Winchester Wildcat 40 grain cphp at 1300 fps, and the Fiocchi 40 grain cprn at 1250 fps are the most reliable to Fire and Extract.

CCI 36 grain Mini Mag 1255 fps is slightly less reliable in Double Action, and has occasional failures to extract.

In Single Action the CCI Velocitor, Winchester Wildcat, and Fiocchi are 100% reliable to Fire and extract.

As far as the Trigger bar I ordered from Numrich, it did not work, the hammer will cock all the way back in Double Action, but it will not Drop, even with the trigger pulled completely to the rear, against the frame..

A new and slightly updated Walther TPH .22 lr would be a nice alternative to the Ruger LCP 2……… Walther just brought back the PP and the .32 ACP so it is not that far fetched?…

Was also wondering about the Stinger Non-Hollow Points.
I wish my Beretta 21a was reliable!
It’s a jamamatic with all ammo.
Clean, cool, lubed gun, MiniMags. Maybe!
Have a Arkansas PPK-S that shoots everything.
Recently saw a YouTube where that MO Preacher said the Ruger LCP 22 is one of todays worse guns.
Mine is near 100% reiiable with ammo it likes. Likes MiniMags, Fed and Stingers.
Rem, Win, Aguila, not so much!
Old School Beretta 70s. Just load it and go. No drama.
My newest 22 is a SIG P22. Hoot to shoot with those 25 round mags.
Shoots everything!
Just be careful loading those 25 round mags!

There is a lot of information contained therein. I'm printing it for future reference.

update to post trigger bar photos

I returned the Numrich trigger bar and asked them to send a replacement, because although it works to fully cock the hammer in double action, it does not release the hammer. I tried to compare the original and the replacement to see if there are any differences. I found an area that is worn on the old trigger bar.
