One of the car shows I attend every year decided for this, their 10th gathering, they wanted to add a little foolish fun to the mix.

They've decided that having owners dress in "year-appropriate" attire for a costume contest would be an interesting addition.

As the show is limited to Japanese cars of 1985 or older vintage, this ought to make for an interesting day.

So, I dug back in my closet and dragged out my "Open only in case of 80's" box. This is what I pulled out for my required photo submission:

80sme2.jpg

1980 Mazda RX-7 GS in 'Tornado Silver'
Styx 'Paradise Theater' Tour '81 jersey
Authentic "Jams" parachute pants w/ velco fly
RayBan Aviators
Casio C-80 calculator watch
Patchwork leather fanny pack
White Reebok trainers

Not shown, the original "Buckaroo Banzai" premiere headband that I plan as the finishing touch.

Anyone else care to join in? :D

Well I never owned a rice burner but I still wear pretty much the same clothes. Jeans don't go out of style. Of course I don't wear some of these new fangeled brands that are out there now.

1980 Mazda RX7

That was my first car! Same year, color, etc. If you would EVER consider selling that car PLEASE contact me any time. [email protected] Thanks!

Missus Fan and I are stuck in the '80s. We both have '80s hair. Hers is "Big" hair. Mine is long in the back, parted in the middle and feathered back. My kids say it's a mullet. No it ain't, but it looks cool.
My first car was a '76 Mazda Cosmo 13B Rotary. 4 BBL carb, 5 speed and 4 wheel disc brakes. I would pull up next to a Camaro or something and keep up with them off the line. That Rotary will pull hard to almost 8,000 RPMs. It amazed a lot of people. I bought it in '84. Burned out the tranny and bought a parts car, exactly the same color. Used in in SCCA autocrosses and my friend bunged it up. The mechanic that swapped the tranny told me about one that had been sitting in a bean field since the late '70s. It had 5,000 miles on it. Same color as the first two. Bought it and drove it. It was so nice I didn't want to drive it in
the Winter. He told me he knew where there was a beater for $500. Different color though. I bought it and drove it in snow.
Bet I'm the only person in the world who owned four Mazda Cosmos.:D
Still have the low mile one stored away.
The Rotary was a GREAT engine.
The '80s were a great time to grow up.

I'm glad to say I missed the '80s. I can also state as fact, never parachute pants, concert tees, reeboks, ball caps (I had hair then), or giant padded shoulder jackets.

Jeans, flannel, denim, or Tee shirts, Carhart coats, boots and sneakers were my staple.
Kept a couple of suits and shoes for special occasions.

I was busy travelling in my VW Westphalia, then owning a company, then 2 more companies and creating a family during the '80s.

I guess I went from H.S. into adulthood, with just a four year government job in between. :D

Sweet looking car and I dig the outfit especially the parachute pants. Loved so many things about the 80's, but I hope those never come back in style.

Heck I have old jeans older than my two daughters. Oldest is 30. Funny thing is they seemed to have shrunk a bit. Still oughta be worth something on ebay. Frank

That is a terrifying concept....

What would even be more scary is the early 70'? Big sideburns, long pointed collars, wide ties, French cuffs, flair pants, mod shirt design, big analog watch with lots of buttons and dials, 'love' beads, 'earth' shoes or Joe Namath 'Dingo' boots, polo necks (that 'cool' look), pure polyester, Hai Karate, mood rings, smiley faces, 8 track players.....

My Speer #9 (1974) has this really 'cool' dude reloading on the cover.

My first rice a-matic was a 76 Corolla wagon, bought used in 81, the wife blew it up in 86. The last clothing I have from the 70's are a pair of Florsheim "Imperials" (ankle high dress shoes) that I still wear, a BDU jacket still fits, and most importantly the Tee-shirt I was wearing the night my first son was born (kept the shirts from all 4 kids), but it would be rags if I tried to put it on ( I'm up about 80-85 since then). Nice car, I had a gold 1981 RX-7 GS that I ran into a telephone pole unfortunately when I fell asleep after working too many late shifts. I loved that car and had planned on keeping it forever.
