Flu shots work for me. Every time I took one, within just a couple of days, I'd come down with a terrible case of the flu.
Quit taking them years ago and haven't had the flu since.

I got my last flu shot back in 1964 and it worked great, I had the flu in less than a week  haven't had a shot or the flu since.:)

I got a flu shot this morning and have had the pneumonia shot.

The flu shot is controversial, but I think it helps strengthen my immune system. We live in a area with a lot of "snow birds" and thousands of tourists through the winter months. Any disease prevention is appreciated due to the sheer number of walking "petri dishes."

Last time I didn't get a flu shot I got the flu. A few years before that, neither my wife nor I got a flu shot. We came down with the flu almost simultaneously. For days, whichever one of us felt the least lousy would make soup and toasted cheese sandwiches when we could stand to eat. So yes, I'm getting one.

In my youth, I was in SAC. We were worldwide Clydes and had to have worldwide shots.
Yellow Fever was the only one that made me sick.
Later, went to SEA. We took the Gamma globulin to aid against hepatitis.
It hurt! It was injected with a large needle in the butt. And it was only good for 6 months.
I got my first one too early! After some training, then after Jungle Survival School at Clark AB, I went down to the terminal to go to Bangkok.
They looked at my shot record and said you need a shot.
A Phillipino who probably had just OJT-Ed from plumber helper gave it to me at the terminal. I got one more, this was by an AF Nurse who had actually gone to school.
It's not a shot I ever want again!

I used to be one of those who claimed the flu shots gave you the flu. Now I know that's not true (and I know I can't convince you if you believe otherwise, so I won't try).

I've gotten them for about 30 years, I've had the pnuemonia shot (and a newer version that I don't recall much about) and the shingles vaccine, though I had the shingles (bad, bad, very bad) back in '04 or '05.

The VA here has tables with personnel offering the shots on every floor and used to have a drive through for the shots, but I don't know if they still do that.

I always, at the insistence of my wife and my primary, get mine in October but I have never asked either why they say to do that.

Don't we do this thread every year?

Looking down a back road in MN, I found an old grave yard. Lots of people, all ages, same few years. Influenza epidemic had run amuck. It can and will kill. If you aren't getting the flu, it's because others around you aren't carrying it and "herd immunity" is protecting you. Good luck.

I have to get approval from my oncologist & family docs first....but we generally try & get them every year... I think that both the pneumonia & flu vaccines work...

I often do a stumble count on how many sibs my Dad had.
They lost a son and a daughter during the 1918-19 Flu Pandemic.

Herd Mentality? We have old GI saying- just roll the dice.
You can't lose in a big game!

Not getting a flu shot, Have not had one in 40 years and had never had the flu. I don't see the point. I no longer hang around children who go to those germ infested things called schools so I don't get sick anymore. Haven't even had a cold for years.

No, stop getting them years ago and haven't had the flu since.

Thought I was gonna pass on with flu in 1994. Swore if I lived I would get flu shot from then on. I lived, get the shot each year and have not had flu since. Pneumonia shot 2 years ago, this years extra dose (old timer) flu shot two weeks ago. Hope no one gets the flu. It can be brutal.

Flu shots etc.

I've gotten one every year for a long time. Got a shingles shot and pneumonia vaccine when I turned 60, and due a pneumonia booster next year when I am 65.

Keeps on tickin'

Used to never get a flu shot but since I got old and since it's free and medicare pays for it been getting it every year and no flu. Had the pneumonia shot earlier this year and the Dr. said it's a one time thing at my age. Medicare covered that one too. Probably should get the shingles shot but have to pay for it and the price is too much for me. Had light case of shingles about 30 years ago and just rolling the dice on not getting it again.

My wife and I got the swine flu shot when we were both in the Army in 1977, both of us got very sick (along with many other military personnel) They found out later that it was a bad batch of vaccine. I get a flu shot every year and so does my wife (she has to, she's a nurse and they're required to).

As the saying goes.... some protection is better than no protection. I've gotten the flu shot basically every year for the past 15. Being around a lot of children and health compromised seniors, it is important for me to not be sick.

I have bad lungs--COPD and bronchiectasis. A real case of flu could, I'm told, put me out of business. I've been getting the shot for a long time and haven't had flu for over thirty years. I've also never had anything but the very mildest reaction to the vaccine.

I'll keep taking the vaccination for the same reasons I carry a gun, a cell phone and a knife. Why chance not having it when you need it?

I've never got a flu shot and only got the flu twice in my entire life.... i think my odds are pretty good so far ....

I'm getting one like I do every year. Last year I did get the flu because that year's shot didn't cover the flu strain that was going around. Regardless, I was only out for 3 days. If you get a flu shot, but still catch the flu, you're likely to have a quicker recovery time than those who don't get it.

Also, average 20 degree days in Pennsylvania winters? You bet I'm definitely getting mine.
