Getting old gives me a unique perspective...

This past Tuesday I went to a Celebration of Life for a lady I've known for 30+ years. I had no idea she had any health issues. She was younger than me.

I hang out a lot at the Eagles, VFW, American Legion and the Bar Association in Frederick County, MD. If it was just a matter of sitting drinking beer and watching TV I could do that at home by myself. But I want to be out and show people that I'm upright, walking around and taking nourishment. And in a figurative sense that is why spend the time here that I do.

And when I talked about spreading joy along with Golden Dollars, I see a lot of faces light up when I give out a stack of Golden Dollars for tips.

At almost 70, I still work full time, in what has become my second career. People ask me why I do it, and I tell them I have to have a reason to get out of bed in the morning...I'm not the type to "do nothing". But of course, there's more to it than that: I enjoy my job, they pay me well, the work I do is important and worthwhile, and my co-workers are like family.

Demographically, my workplace is very interesting. We have 15 employees, two supervisors, and our director. We could be the poster people for the diversity of our country: name the demographic, and it's represented there. I am by far the oldest employee: the next youngest is 54, and our newest hires are in their late 20s. Associating every day with young people -- especially good young people who are mission-oriented, committed, and professional -- really does help keep you young. I learn a lot from them, and I would like to think they learn a lot from me...

Palladin, I loved your post! I agree with most of what you said...but I can't call myself a curmudgeon...yet. :)

... that depends upon whether your statement was true when you called me, “my friend”.

I hear guys use those two words as a routine part of speech with every other guy they talk to.

It's almost as tiresome as two gals who send each other off with a phony "luv you" each time they part.

I'm a writer, but I don't write fiction -- I'm not that creative.

You have certainly answered my question, rejected my offer, and made your wishes clear.

I’ll honor your wishes and avoid further contact with you in the future.
