Getting Rid of Privet Hedge?

I need something that I can use to stop the growth of these hedges on the edges of my yard.I have already cut a bunch of them down but they are beginning to put out leaves again,what can I easily buy that will destroy them completely.I have tried Roundup but it has only been partially successful.

I use Ultra Kill, but you have to apply it 4 or 5 times for it to work. The ingredient you are looking for is glyphosate, the more the better. Ultra Kill is 41% glyphosate, I think most round up is a little less. I use Ultra Kill because it has the highest concentrate of glyphosate for the money. If you use it enough it will kill privet. I think privit is some of the most difficult plants to kill.

It takes a combination of cutting and Roundup and also multiple applications of both, I have 34 acres of the stuff and have been waging war on it for more than 10 years.Your lucky its relatively contained so you should be able to manage it pretty well.

That said for woody shrubs I find Ortho Max to be better on some tough to kill stuff, short of a flame thrower

When glyphosate just doesn't work. If you buy it get the generics same as roundup but get the concentrated kind.

Well since the backhoe is broke down and the Sherman is out on loan and a friend is borrowing my flame thrower I will begin with the two products mentioned and see what happens.

It is the concentrate and I buy it in 2 ½ gallon containers under the brand name Big N' Tuf from Tractor Supply or some feed stores. It may take more than one application. The non-concentrate is not nearly as effective.

Gordon's 875 Brushkiller. Works great. I have had to spray some more that once for a total kill, but it will take the leaves off and keep them off for that growing season. If you have one of the Farmers Coop's anywhere close, they always have it. I think I saw some a Tractor Supply, but do not remember.

Not to step on any feeling here , but glyphosate is like applying fertilizer to privet hedge. This is the chemical name that was Roundup before the patent ran out and now there are many different companies selling glyposate under different brands. Most commercial is 41 %. It is a broad leaf weed killer, will do nothing to brush, even in super heavy applications.

A pint of the 875 will kill about 1/4-1/2 acre of privet hedge. Leaves will be gone in 3-5 days if you apply on a hot day and get no rain. make sure to cover all the leaves on your plants. Next years application to the sprouts should take care of the stuff. Even if not, one spraying a year is all that is needed.

2 4 D with amine is a broadleaf killer......Better than round up for anything with leaves.......Will not kill grass.

If burning is an option privet does not tolerate fire very well. It may sprout from the roots after a fire but spraying a stressed plants helps a lot with chemical control. Chemicals are good but you run the risk of killing something you want to keep.

Remember,in order for the herbicide to really work ,the plant has to be in an active growing stage not at the end of its season.early spring is best

Don't know anything about that hedge but I do know growing things do not like salt.

I have seen a lot of trees and ground cover killed by rock salt (sodium chloride) our DOT puts out. I have also used it to control areas. Simply make up a slurry of rock salt and water and apply liberally, it might take a couple season but it will do the job.

Use 2,4-D. Follow the package directions regarding mixing but instead of water use diesel. A one two punch that has never failed me yet

Intentionally spraying diesel anyplace which could drain into the ground water or other public waters will solve all your problems since you will be in a homeless shelter if EPA finds out.

I don't believe The University of Florida would recommend using diesel in a herbicide mix if it was illegal. There is a difference in dumping diesel and using it in an approved manner. Some state regs might preclude the use of diesel, but unless it has changed in the last year or two, it is still legal in most places.
