Just found out the neighbor "kid" is joining the Army. He has always been the neighbor that everyone wishes they had...stops and helps out if I'm working on something, drops in with his latest deer hunting stories, is polite and respectful, etc. What are some ideas for a send-off gift for him in appreciation for what he has been to me as well as what he is doing for our country?

Because he is just now leaving for boot camp, or will be in the future, how about a phone card?

It will allow him to call home when he gets the chance without having to do it collect, or find change.

I would hold off on a knife or flashlight until after boot camp and he is classified, his MOS may make a different gift a little more appropriate.

The knife or a quality LED light are good suggestions, but a phone card and postage stamps are always good to have around, on the lower end of the scale.

Along those lines, a few prestamped post cards so he can jot a note every now and then to his folks is not out of line.

He may appreciate them, but I guarantee you his mother will love them, as long as he uses them.

A good knife would make a great boot camp graduation present.

You don't mention your budget. How much do you want to spend?

I agree with the phone cards. And, I'd wait on the knife/light till he's for sure about his MOS.

Certainly agree on the Brownies or anything like that in a "care" package. I still remember my grandmother baking a birthday cake for me each birthday I was in Viet Nam. It came by boat, in those days, and was a bit stale when it arrived, but it still tasted great.

Also, as an afterthought, there's places in the States where they may not let him have the type of knife suggested on post.

I would be happy to spend a couple hundred bucks (maybe more for the right thing). I like the advice so far - care packages, phone cards, etc. until after BC. Thanks all!

I've used a Swiss Army Knife for the last 30 years and it has really served me well. It may be their most inexpensive model with a modest number of tools but it was just right. You can identify it by its plain aluminium handles. It is light, compact and hasn't rusted yet. I'd wait until he finishes training before you give him a knife.

i agreed by giving him a phone cards and a Swiss knife for his protection too while he is away from his family...and also a prayer for his safeness...and by giving him a piece of advice to protect his self from danger....
