Glock 20SF 10mm

I have a 29SF, great firearm and actually conceals well. I got it for hiking but I also find myself carrying when not hiking too. I dont shoot any hot ammo, standard stuff 1050-1150fps from Freedom Munitions, Remington UMC if I need to get some locally last minute and my SD round is 200gr Gold Dot, currently exclusive to Cabelas. I dont want to experiment with recoil springs so I keep it around there. I do want to get a longer drop in barrel for hiking and maybe loading some Buffalo Bore Hard Cast. Even though BB says there hard cast wont foul a polygonal Glock barrel like a lead bullet, I wouldn't mind having the extra velocity either. A G20 is on my wish list too just to have.

I know some people talk about using it in the woods, on hikes. When it comes to that I don't go often and when I do I bring a completely different firearm

Many, many shoot 40S&W through their G20's without a problem. I have a KKM G20 10mm to 40S&W conversion barrel for mine. Mainly not to gunk up the chamber of the 10mm barrel with the shorter brass.

Well yes I have experience with a 10mm. I may even have a few. Better still, I have experience reloading 10mm.
I'd look seriously at your want. Do you want the full size gun or do you want a compact or even a larger hunting size gun?
The 20 is the best of a lot of worlds. You get a decent sight radius and 15+1 capacity. The barrels are fairly well supported now and will endure the hotter loads without too much trouble. You'll get a bit of bulging, but it goes away in the resizing die... despite what people may say about needing a bulge buster die.
Recently, I had occasion to test my 29's, with their factory barrels and an extended LW barrel and I learned that the energy from the extended barrel is noticeably higher than the stock barrel length. This being said, if I were chasing the most energy out of the gun in a wilderness situation, I would carry a modified G40 with a KKM extended barrel to 7-8". In a shoulder rig or chest rig this extra length is not even noticed. There are even aftermarket magazine extensions that can up your capacity further should you desire.
You will be chasing brass a bit longer than you would a .45 or 9mm. This is easily accounted for with proper preparation. A set of tent poles and a well placed tarp and there's a collection of brass to be reloaded.
You can reload the 10mm to over published loads safely and get a lot of power out of it or you can dial it back and enjoy long slow roll of recoil. The off the shelf loadings from the major manufacturers are less than exciting, but the brass is great. There are deals to be found in 10mm range ammo. When you are ready, you can find some really good hot loads from Double Tap, Underwood, Reed's, or Buffalo Bore.
I enjoy the cartridge and appreciate it for what it is. You can find bigger and badder, but not in a Glock or 1911.
 
I had a 20SF and enjoyed it but when the Sig 220 SAO came out, I had to have one... sold the Glock to get the Sig and never regretted it. I use. bulge buster die and it brings the brass back to new specs. If you get the Glock and find yourself wanting a few more mags, I have a couple still in the factory package - I'll make you a good deal.
 
My G20SF is the only glock product I own. It's my hiking gun until someone (anyone) makes a striker fired lightweight 10mm. I changed the disconnector to a 3.5# which lightened the trigger very slightly, and made it much crisper than stock, put Trijicon night sights on the slide, and a Lone Wolf barrel inside.

For day-hikes and backpacking trips it rides in a Bianchi M12 military flap holster attached to the pack's waist belt. I took a very serious tumble about 50' down into a ravine on a solo off-the-trails hike into the Wonder Mountain Wilderness, and despite numerous impacts with the ground on the descent, it came out better than me when we got to the bottom.

WE have a FEW grizzlies, lots of black bears and a fair number of moose. While hunting, I carry a hot-loaded 45 OM Blackhawk or a Reeder SBH in 454. For plain woods walking, I carry a G20. Love it. Recoil is no worse than a 45 (auto or LC). Decent accuracy (not as good as my G27 in 357 Sig but not bad at all!).

Like all Glocks, it is:
1. Ugly
2. reliable
3. Ugly
4. Accurate
5. Ugly

and, did I say, they are ugly?
 
It's $500 plus the ammo. Not a small plus. The Glock 10mm can also fire 40 cal in the same barrel and also I believe the same MAGS. (Somebody please confirm) Glock 20 - 15ish rounds of near 41 mag power? Tough to beat if you want that. And there are many companies offering 10mm from 40 cal to ultra 10 mm power. The Silver Tips are popular self defense rounds and fall between a 40 and a Buffalo Bore or Underwood 10mm.

Ps. :( When it appeared we were going to have a different president I sold my 1006, 1076 and Glock 40 MOS to buy what I believed to be banned in the near future. Doh!!

Not really a wise thing to do shooting 40 SW in a G20 10mm.

Yes, it can be done, but semi autos head space on the case mouth and with a shorter case it is then supported on the extractor and puts unnecessary stress on it.

Can it be done? Yes, Has it been done Yes. Should it be?? Up to the individual and the debate rolls on.

I have no reason to do it as I load my 10mm to any power level I want to.

For the OP the Glock 10mm is a a great 10mm (I am not a Glock Fan Boy) I wanted the Sig 220 in 10MM but way to expensive!! and didn't want a 1911 platform,
 
My 20 is my favorite Glock. Love it. If I could only have one, currently this is the one. Subject to change as I aguire others. 😜
 
Wow...thanks for all the input. Tough choice to make. Currently carrying a G23 on the farm/woods but want a little extra. We get Mr BB coming around so I don't want to have
a stare down with him. Guess I could tote a 4"629, wouldn't feel out gunned with that.

If that's an option, why are we talking about plastic guns?

I love the freaking heck out of my 4" M29. It's tough to choose, but currently it's my favorite gun. A 4" N frame is about as good as it gets.
