Does anyone know if ANY 686 models came with a non- brushed finish? This would exclude any special models from any distributors like Lipseys etc.
Myself I absolutely do not like any sort of gloss, high gloss or polished finish on a SS gun and thats how mine came to me. Its definitely not a high gloss mirror polish but it is polished.
I completely disassembled my Redhawk and used maroon scotchbrite pads mounted on my benchtop buffer and gave the finish a renew and it came out really, really nice. Im wishing I could do the same with the 686, if the gloss is not factory. On the box under "finish" it just says SS.

I am not aware of any Bright Stainless in the 686 line, but let's see what the experts say about the special distributor guns. I would bet it is a polish job by a previous owner.

I agree with the post ^^^^^^^^. I am not aware of Factory "Gloss" / bright finishes on M686's. That said, there might have been special runs by Lew Horton and alike that I am unaware of.
If so, their configuration would most likely be different from standard factory.

I really dont believe that mine is any distributors special, it is a pre-lock + model so a 7 shot RB 4". I just really dont like an even sort of gloss finish on a SS revolver so Im thinking about going to, or back to the brushed type look using the maroon scotchbrite pads I used on my redhawk.

It came out pretty good and just seems easier to keep looking good.

Nice Job on the Redhawk.

Since you have the box and label why not just give the SKU so everyone what model you are asking about?

There was a guy on the forum that went by the name of the Dhart and he had a procedure for restoring the factory finish that was absolutely outstanding. He could take a scratched and beat up Stainless Smith, and make it look as good as brand new with various Scotch Brite pads, Flitz, and other products. I remember some of his procedures were different than you would expect to get the grain to look good. You might search old posts by him.

Thank you my friend.

And I just discovered something, the bix is not the original box!!. I just noticed that. I bought it used and just assumed it was. Its for a 4"686 but not a + model and the serial is different. Disappointing.
