I have had a hankering for a .357 revolver again, and particularly a good double action. I have had my share of N frames and might consider a good 4 inch Model 28 shooter, but I am curious what a 686 or even a 586 with a 4 inch barrel goes for these days. I want an older 6 round gun, preferable without the lock. It doesn't have to be perfect but I would like a decent shooter example. I really haven't kept up on prices like I should have.

I would say $550 - $750
I paid $525 for a nice shooter grade 6" 586 within the last year
The really sad thing is I haven't taken it to the range yet

WOW.. I guess they went up quite a bit.
3 years ago I bought a very nice no dash 586 with the 8" barrel for a mere $350

Prices have gone up for a variety of reasons. I paid $350 for a 2.5" 686+ a number of years ago and more recently the same price for a 6" M586. I doubt that will happen again!

Results of my search

I looked at used and new over the last couple years. (686s only as down in the humid south all my guns are stainless.)

Since I wanted one without the IL I ended up looking at the local gun shows and on Gunbroker. It was hard to find one local at the shows so I went online.

As mentioned earlier the prices were all over the place depending on model number and condition. The selling price seemed to run between 700 on the low end and over 2 grand on the higher end. One I was bidding on in like new condition ended up going for just over a thousand. I used a buy it now on another I was looking at and paid 850 for it. It was a solid gun and pretty close to like new condition. There was another that had some scratches and was little more used that went for 750.

It is worth noting that not every older gun without an IL is listed as pre-lock or no IL so I ended up looking at a lot of used guns on there before narrowing it down.

If you haven't bought online in the past make sure you do your homework on the seller. Some sellers have less than reputable feedback. Even great sellers with a lot of sales will have a few bad reviews but if it is more than a few percentage points of the total feedback beware.

For the record I am thrilled with the gun I bought and while I bought my first 686 for $319 I was happy to pay what I did for my most recent purchase.

I think varmint243 has it about right for a 4" gun in good shape without box and papers...$550-700. You will find a few asking more but you should be able to find one in that range with a little hunting.

I my area , a clean , tight and original 4 inch 586 or 686 would START at 600.00 and move up to an easy 750-800

MANY people I know ( I am one of them) , simply will not buy anything with a lock , so to them used ones are the only game in town.

In Cali, inflated market, $850-$900.

I paid $825 and am very pleased with my 586 no dash.

It's getting to where you have to have ten hundred dollar bills in your pocket to go shopping for any nice older Smith. But, then, my wife paid $700 for a puppy today (a poodle). Hope our two terriers like her. You don't have that problem with guns. . .they all get along with each other.

Some times you run into a seller that has owned the gun for 20+ years.. and he sells to recoup the cost from back then.

I've bought many for the same cost as when they were new 20 years ago.

But you have to search and strike quick.

800 - 1000 in Kali depending on condition.

LGS has new 4'' 686s for $685. Taxes and transfer fees gets it up to about $740. No way would I pay more for a used one....lock or no lock. I have 686s with and without locks/MIM. The newer ones(locks/MIM) are more accurate than the old ones. Go figure.

Hmm...at the show today was a 686 for $600 I believe, from a dealer I like. Now I'm thinking I could live without a 586. I've been hankering more for blued guns though...

I want to say thank you to all of the contributors here at the forum. Due to your discussion of current pricing, I jumped on a very lightly used 686-2 for $550+tax about 2 months ago. I bought it so that I could put away my 19-3 that is in pristine condition with box, papers and extras. Now I'm thinking that if prices continue to spiral upward, we may need to put away the 686 and go with a Rossi or Taurus:eek: or God forbid a lawyered up newer S&W.

BAM!

:p

Now that right there is funny! All of it.

586/686 from no dash to -4 have the original lockwork. -5 and above have MIM and new lockwork.

You should be aware of that.

Not only will I not own a lock, I prefer pre MIM.

Nothing wrong with MIM, just not my cup of tea.
