Going to New York this June-need ideas

When I was 13 years old, my family went to NYC. We parked the car and did all our in-city travel either on foot or subway. It took forever to get anywhere and everything was way too expensive. We didn't have time to see half the stuff my Mother had planned.
Frankly the big city didn't impress this old country boy one bit. I remember looking at the view from the top of the Empire State Building, nothing but more city as far as I could see and thinking I never want to come back here again.
That was around 1967. So far I've been good to my word.

Been there done that and have no desire to go back. No offense to New Yorkers but its not my cup of tea by a long shot.
That's all I have to say.

Send back pictures of you ice skating at Rockefeller Center. Last time I was there was 1967, and I have no plans in going back.

I lived and/or worked in Manhattan for 20 yrs. and I loved it(Illinois farm boy). Do not take a car into the city! It sounds like there's not enough time to do much so have a family discussion and decide in advance what to focus on. If you don't want to stand in a crowd and mug for a camera, just go off on your own. Carnegie Deli is a tourist ripoff but everything costs a lot...gotta milk those tourists.

Leave your guns, knives and attitude in the Gret Stet.

Have been to NYC three times though it's been years. We saw
the musical "ANNIE" on Broadway to give you an idea how long
ago was the last time. Others have mentioned the places I would
say go. Do all the tourist stuff, it's fun and alot of it's educational.
NYC, a great place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there.

Some ideas?
OK
Study up on the public transportation and park somewhere else and take the train in. We parked in CT to go to NYC....
A day ain't enough time - neither is 3 --- Go earlier.
Lots to see and do - DO NOT MISS Central Park.

P.S. Their public transportation is a bit more involved than NOLA's.
Really - Study up!

I don't know about Central Park unarmed. Maybe put one of them 20 foot Louisiana gators on a leash and walk it like a pet dog would keep the muggers away.

Listen to others!

Under no circumstances drive to Manhattan! Period. Actual drive there Thursday is doable but return on Friday afternoon will take several (like 3) hours. Not making this up! Add a summer shower and you will miss the rehearsal.

If your lovely bride insists on the driving trip to the city, may I suggest you fly on Wednesday and do the city on Thursday. Leave Friday morning. That would not be bad...save the parking $$$$ and drive aggravation.

You also might consider flying into BWI, train direct to Manhattan, tourist stuff there, train (LIRR) to Islip, and flight home from Islip.

Gave fun!

Be safe.

The traffic will be nightmarish. Take the LIRR from the Island into Penn Station, pick a nice sports bar to hang out in, and let the girls do the tourist thing. God help you!

LouisianaJoe; I would refuse to go. My wife can decide what she wants to do and I decide what I will or will not do. I started my marriage that way and we will celebrate our 40 year anniversary in March. I do not believe that a wife should be given the right to make decisions that makes the husband do things that he does not want to do. .[/QUOTE said:
Does your wife know you posted this? :D Larry

I agree with everyone who says skip the car and use public transportation. I lived there for 12 years back in the 70s and 80s. Was most recently back in 2011 and was surprised at how much nicer and cleaner it is these days.

Surely you are not gonna drive up from Louisianna? Take a plane to an NYC airport, there are three, get a hotel in Manhattan on Thursday, see the sights Friday, and out to Long Island Friday night... Hmm. There is an awful lot to see. I'd fly up earlier in the week and give yourself at least a couple of days to look around. Yes, it will be expensive, but I think you should bite the bullet and have a good time.

(Your wife's plan would be a nightmare, frankly...)

NYC is hard to absorb in a month never mind a day. You could burn a whole day in the Museum of Natural History, another at Met Art. I would stay at the Ritz Carlton over by the Hudson on the lower right corner of Manhattan. Walk over to the Staten Island Ferry terminal and walk on the boat. You'll appreciate- It's free! Goes right past the Statue of Liberty and reasonably close to Ellis Island. When you get back, walk over to the South Street Seaport. Eat, look at the Peking, an actual 4 mast sailing ship. If you go in the "museum", you'll be amazed at the bunks about 4' long. Sailors were short or uncomfortable. Go down to the Subway and ride uptown to Central Park walk around an hour or so. look at the Dakota (where John Lennon met his end). Get back on the same subway and go back downtown to one stop before you started. Eat at Hop Sing's. Walk back to R/C. Should be time for drinks and bed. Joe

Don't know if you should mention the number of times you have been duck hunting with Phil Robertson.
Shame the concentration of the trip, (aside from the wedding,) will be in the city, those country folks in most of New York, the state, are just like they are all over.... In fact, they will often be more critical of the "city" than anyone.

Love it or hate it, I doubt you will ever forget it.

Good suggestions all. I've let my wife read this and she is reconsidering. I've been to the Hamptons before and we both loved it. She kinda liked the idea of taking the Long Island RR to montauk and back.
