Going up to Black Bear country, What caliber just in case?

Any body else see last nights river monsters, the pilot and guide pulled a gigantic looking 500 smith when a young bear got too close. He fired one shot into the water turning the bear, but he still did not leave. When he fired the bear took off in a hurry. They actually had numerous adult bears all around them while salmon fishing in alaska.

That was a Griz and they ended up letting him have the Salmon and moved off wisely.

Since getting a couple proper holsters, belt carry of such as a 3" or 4" 629 is remarkably comfortable.

I prefer the chest-carry style as "tanker holster" for the 1911 or hunting length hand guns.

Well, I've already got these so, here we go.

If I had to carry a shorty, it would be this baby:

If I was able to carry my trusty 5", this would be the one:

Either way, the ammo would be the same in Bear country:

Heavy .44 Magnum Pistol & Handgun Ammunition

I always have three guns when out one always a large caliber (44, 45, 500). The other is for everything else (9, 40) and a long gun (30 30, 223, or 00 buck in a pump). In the wild you never want to be under gunned and make sure you have a camera in case you score a bigfoot and can't drag him.

Heck, I'm just bringing my 45 ACP with 185 +P gr Golden Sabers.
Not a a 44 Mag but 534 ft/lbs energy at the muzzle. Best I can do on short notice.:D

"Short notice" is 5 minutes. We've been talking about this for a week.

A 1911 with 185 gr. hollow points. Seriously? If you're going to take that gun, at least put 230 gr. hardball in it. A 185 JHP is NOT a bullet fit for a bear. That thing was designed with flimsy-built human construction in mind.

Short notice to get a good holster for the revolver. Never said it was a 1911 either.;) But yes I can put 230 Ball in it, Just don't have +P The 185's have a lot more energy than a 230.Plus these are bonded Golden Sabers
Light and fast vs heavy and slow.

534 vs 356 at the muzzle, 446 vs 326 at 50 yds

I'm taking a walk in the woods, I am not hunting. I'm really not too concerned about the bears. The two legged creatures are more of a problem.:)

Keith,

I have it sighted in at point blank, figure that's were it will all happen if it does.;)

I found these in the ammo box. 230gr +P T series.

I know you're not hunting. You'd be a fool to hunt a bear with a .45 acp.

Sir,

Good choice...With a few Hardball slipped in for good measure, maybe.

Su Amigo,

I say add a millimeter to your handgun cartridge. A Glock 29 loaded with Double Tap 200 gn. hardcast.

And you can still carry it IWB.

Nope, no 10MM in the safe. Only one lone Glock, 9mm. Lots of 40 SW of assorted makes though.

I hope you guys keep this thread going while I am away. I wonder if it is a record or near record for a bear thread??
If I do not post in 2 weeks, you'll know the Bears won.:D

Yeah, 9mm, .40 S&W and .45 ACP.

Here you go: Geologist describes double attack by Alaska Range grizzly: Bear Attacks | adn.com

The only reason that I would carry my .44 Mag. loaded up with Buffalo Bore ammo is because I don't have one of these in 454 Casull.

I might only get one shot (if that!) and if I was lucky enough to get a hit, I want to impart some serious energy on that big . . . I mean BIG . . . target.

JMHO
