Gold Plated Model 36---Thoughts? Value?

In another thread, I posted this picture. I now have the LETTER. Mr. Jinks calls it a "Special Variation"--sent for plating before shipment. Anybody seen anything like this before? I bought just because it was different.

It's an interesting "variant".

According to the letter, there are nine others like it floating around out there somewhere. Wonder where they are.

I have no idea of value, but I will say this. It's obviously a niche gun, and in my opinion, those stocks are detracting from whatever value it does have. They look like buffalo horn, or a grip company's imitation of buffalo horn. And I mean no offense by that...but to me, they clash badly with the gold plating. I seriously doubt S&W shipped the gun to Rex with those stocks on it. Some stags might look better? Or do you have the original stocks for it?

I can't tell from your photo...are the hammer and trigger plated as well?

Could we see some more photos? Are you going to shoot it? Carry it?

Back in the 1990s, I was walking a Dayton, OH show and saw a gold plated M36. The vendor wanted something like $3200 for it, but indicated a willingness to come down a bit. A girl walked up and told the guy he could have her Z28 and she'd sleep with him for a week end in trade for it. The vendor was level headed and insulting. He asked to see the Z28 first. :)

I do not have the original grips---but I agree with you. It has been shot but not much--I have "A" box--not original--but period correct. Has original Model 36 paperwork.

Don't know where to carry it unless it was WELL concealed! Not sure I can stand the conversations--:)

Will try to post post full range of pictures later.

FWIW, I think the contrast of the black grips and gold plating look good together.
If they are some kind of real horn, like buffalo, that makes it even better.
Odd variant, for sure, but I kinda like it - or at least the way it looks.

That's certainly a "too each their own" sort of Chiefs. As H Richard said, "very limited market."

I've coughed up from less than $300 to more than $800 for a variety of Chiefs, and I wouldn't be enticed by that one anywhere in that range. Not slamming your Chiefs (there are many who don't appreciate many of mine); it's simply not my cuppa.

When I was affiliated with the Rex Firearms Co. we had a number of Chiefs that were factory Nickle plated Gold plated. Some were done by Fountain Plating . Some were done by a local NYC plater who had a limited gunsmithing license.
Also had a dew .357 nickle plated revolvers Gold Plated.
They all sold well for Premium Prices.

The grips are Jay Scott black pearls. About 30 bucks on eBay.

I like the gun, though.
