Hi all,

I'm looking to bulk-purchase 1,000 rounds of ammo for my 9mm Shield, and I was wondering what would be some good ammo to order (preferably around the $300-400 range). I've been using white-box Federal FMJ ammo as pictured below and so far I've had only one stovepipe after shooting approximately 100 rounds. I was going to try to bulk order that ammunition but I can't seem to find it online. Also, I've applied for my CCL, and want to grab some JHP ammo while I can. Any opinions? I was looking at Speer Gold Dot but after seeing its performance with the NYPD (officers using that round shot a suspect over 20 times and did not kill him) I'm discouraged away from it. The only ammo I've ever been familiar with is the stuff the Army gives me at the range so whatever insight I could get would be awesome. Thanks!

For good bulk target/practice ammo at a good price, check out Freedom Munitions and Georgia Arms.

As far as SD ammo, Federal HST 124gr, Golden Saber 124gr +P, and Hornady custom XTP 124gr have functioned well in mine. There is nothing wrong with Gold Dots either. If 20 rounds of GD does not put a bad guy down, then none of the other 9mm ammo will either.

For range/target I use Federal 100 round packs from Wally World. They're fairly inexpensive at just under $26/box. For self defense, I haven't had any problems with Hornady CD and Winchester PDX1.

Any of the major manufacturer bulk ammo will serve you well. Just search for the best deal. For serious social business I run the federal HST 147gr bullet in all my 9mm pistols.

The Speer Gold Dot 124gr +P 9mm is an outstanding round for duty/defense that is used with good results across the country by LE. Handguns are poor stoppers but weapons of convenience. Bad guys have taken numerous rounds of all the service calibers, failed to stop, and lived. Look into failure to stop training which is much more important than bullet and caliber. Bill

WalMart (Maroon box) Federal ValuePack is preferred, Remington UMC.
Obviously these are not 'Bulk' items, but they're my favorites.

While I don't buy HP in Bulk, Speer LE Gold Dot is great.

Most on line ammo dealers have single box prices not too much different per round than bulk. Suggest you buy a small quantity first to ensure it works well in your pistol. Here's an ammo shopping bot that is useful:

Thank you all very much, I'm going to check these all out now. Also, is anybody familiar with Magtec 9mm ammunition? I've read mostly good things about it too but I seem to come across good advice on this forum.

My department has had outstanding results with the Gold Dot 124+p. It's effectiveness has never been in doubt. I carry it every day on-duty and in all of my 9mm pistols off-duty. The last time I spoke with a pathologist regarding ammo, he told me he could not tell the difference in the damage cause to a body by most 9mm, .40 and .45 unless he found a bullet in the body.

Agreed, if 3 or 4 rounds center mass does not stop a hop-head, then other measures are necessary as The Sarge said. I have run Freedom Munitions through mine with no issues at all. For SD loads, I use Hornady Critial Defense and Golden Sabres and mine has handled them flawlessly

This is so true. On average, any caliber requires 2-3 shots to stop a target.

Ammo recommendations are like oil recommendations for cars. Everyone likes what they use the best. For the range, I bulk purchase the white federal box you have pictured above. It has ran flawlessly on both of my 9mm shields and in my CZ. I can buy it locally for $360 per 1,000 rounds. As far as defensive, I use Winchester PDX 147 grain. It also runs very nicely in all my weapons. I prefer the extra weight to the extra velocity, but again, to each their own. Whatever you choose for defensive rounds, test it first. Make sure your weapon will cycle it properly and that you shoot well with it. Each gun is just slightly different too. What works well in mine may not work so well in your.

Do you know where you could find that ammo online in bulk? What exactly would I search for? I can't seem to find it, all I come across is the Federal American Eagle ammo.

In pretty impressed with Speer's Gold Dot 124+p reputation so that's what I run in my Shield. Was running Hornady Critical Duty, then 115+p Corbons but switched to the Gold Dots with a heavier load.
