good deal on a Wolf & Klar

I have found most pawn shops to be incompetent as they usually price 50% beaters the same as a NIB example. Sometimes, however, they err in the favor of the consumer. I had my doubts.

That has been my observation as well. It appears you beat the odds this time though! Great find, congratulations!

Yes, I commonly see pawn shops try to sell old glocks for $550 and beat up Ruger Blackhawks for around $500...essentially what one would pay for new examples. Deals like this one keep me checking the local shops out once in a while when convenient.

I got her to the range today and fired 12 rounds from the bench at 25 Yards, keeping most in the black, although the flyers were embarassing. Really felt good to send some lead through this 80-yr-old classic. I was using my handloads with 250 GR Keith-type bullets.

Nice! Love those grips.

Jelly Bryce

Today, I went to the range for a practice day with my good friend Kevin, who is also a fireams instructor with a local Sheriff's Deptartment.

I took out the Wolf & Klar and handed it to him with a handull of 44 Specials. He examined it closely and smiled as he loaded it. We went in close and he looked at me and said "Jelly Bryce", then went into a series of one-handed point shooting drills.

We decided that if we were cops in the 1920s or 30s this is exactly what we would be packing.

Awesome find. I've been on the hunt for one for years now. Good on you and enjoy the heck out of it!

it would simply have been labeled a 'scarce, rare collectible S&W' and had a $1900 sticker on it.

And it would be fairly priced!

And I did find one a while back. It was at a tiny gun show in Paris, KY. I negotiated the seller down from $575 to $550. Then I lost my nerve and just bought it. At the small gun shows, often there aren't many buyers with that kind of cash in their pocket. So a couple of weeks later was the big National Gun Day show. I brought it along for show and tell. After we'd set up our tables, i got it out to taunt my partner. For a smart guy, he fell right into the trap. He said "whut's thet?" So I told him it was my new 44. He took a real interest in it. Then he said "how much" . So bein' nice, I told him $1100. I figured double'un the price would keep him at bay for a while. It was good that he suffered. And he kept on looking.

A little while later he came over and tossed down 11 hundred dollar bills. Then asked "where's my gun?" called my bluff, so I was out a gun. It was OK, most of the time I lost money on my "deals". So I got busy wandering the aisles and looking. We had a deal going on. He'd walk then come back and I'd go out. We'd spend the weekend and hardly ever see each other. So I got back and didn't see the gun. I asked him where it was and he motioned to the guy behind us. He'd bought it for $1650! Every time that gun changed hands, it went up $550!

There's a rule of life here. Every time you see a 4" 3rd model, you should just buy it. Even a refinished one is worth big bucks. I've got 2 of them right now. One a "miltary, the other a target". Guess how many target 4" guns we've seen out and about. Right now the total is 2, and I've got one!

Nice find, especially with those catalin grips! I consider myself lucky to have a couple of sets of them by Maurice Scharlack. Are they marked on the back in any way?

I took off the grips and examined the insides closely. Each had three straight scratches but no other markings.

Actual "Wolf & Klar" 44

Resurrecting this thread as the letter arrived today with a wealth of good information. Most importantly that it is an ACTUAL Wolf & Klar, shipped to them in July of 1932.

I am holding on to this gun for a while as this is the very kind of vintage Smith that makes me love vintage Smiths. That said, how many of you would assign any kind of premium to the value for it having been sent to Wolf & Klar?

From what I've read is that most of these were shipped to W&K. They say it's kinda hard to find one that wasn't shipped there. So I don't think it would add to the value.

"We went in close and he looked at me and said "Jelly Bryce", then went into a series of one-handed point shooting drills." hahaha thats awesome!
Whats also awesome is it went to a renaissance man that really appreciates it.

Kevin and I both know that Jelly Bryce carried a "lucky" 4" Wolf & Klar 44 Special during his heyday as an Oklahoma City Detective and as an FBI Agent until the 357 magnum eventually replaced it as his primary carry gun. We both consider Bryce as probably the most dangerous gunfighter who ever lived.

I got mine in a pawn shop for $500 also. It letters to W&K in 1930. (I added the stags)

It came w/ a set of pre war magnas that were not original to the gun. from the late '30s. I gave them a good home on a '37 Heavy Duty .38-44.

Forum member "Bill Bates" told me that as soon as I shot this gun, I 'd never part with it. Bill was right. After one trip to the range, I was in love. It's not for sale ...period! :)

FANTASTIC find!!!

Best,
Charles
