I'm fairly new to Jersey and am looking for a good gun shop to buy an M and P .45. Any suggestions?

Depends on where your at in NJ, Down south in Glassboro theres a shop called Bob's sporting goods, owner Bob Viden is a great guy to deal with as are both of his sons, A bit above Bordentown there was a place I think it is called Harry's and perhaps it was alslo Army Navy surplus store. They had an incredible number of firearms! Just looked it up it is on Rt 130 in Robbinsville!

I will echo what 1fly mentioned. Depends on where you are. I have lived in South Jersey for the past 35 years so quite familiar with that part (as a gun owner, I am glad to live in PA now). NJ gun owners have lots of hurdles to overcome when buying a gun, so if your not familiar with the states gun laws, start reading up and asking questions. You'll need a NJ Firearms Purchaser ID card and a Pistol Permit for a handgun and either can take 3 months to process. Welcome to NJ.
South: Bob's Little Sport Shop: Owned by Bob Viden who is also on the NRA board of Directors as I recall, although may serve the NRA in another capacity right now. They have a shooting range in-house. I have purchased many guns through Bob and his family. I support Bob's shop as much as possible because he does take an active role in defending the rights of gun owners and especially gun owners in NJ in one of the most restrictive states in the nation.
Central: Bordentown Area: Harry's Army Navy or Sportsmans Center.
I do not frequent North Jersey, so can't offer much help there. There was a place called Ray's Sport Shop, but I believe it may no longer be open.
On a common gun like a M&P, you shouldn't have much of a problem getting one wherever you go. It is a good idea to develop a report with a local shop though. It can help you out in many ways.
If you are looking for a place to shoot in South Jersey, it doesn't get much better than South Jersey Shooters in Winslow (outdoor pistol/rifle) or if you like trap/rifle/pistol, Square Circle Sportsmen in Berlin.

Try Hackettstown Guns and Ammo, 147 Main Street, Hackettstown New Jersey 07840. Store number is 908-852-5260. Hours M-F 9:30 to 5, Sat 10-3. There are 5 M&P's in stock now. Ask for Walt. He is super.
I'm in mid Jersey, Sayreville area. I've been to the local PD and went through all of the required paperwork and such. I have a few handgun permits on the way. Hopefully have them within a few weeks. I'm shopping around now and tried out about 6 .45's at a range last week and kept going back to the M & P. I see good prices online but by the time I pay the transfer fees and such I don't really gain anything. Like u say (IC), I would feel better off supporting a local shop (pay a bit more if need be) and starting a repoir with them anyway. I'm pretty much a newbie to the gun world so I'll need any help I can get anyway. I'm going to check these guys out. I appreciate all the info.

Yep, cultivating a good relationship with a repuatable dealer is money and time well spent. I can't recommend enough finding a decent local club to shoot at too...whatever club is most convenient.
If you are just getting into things firearms related, I also can recommend a guy who instructs North (Belleville) and South(Winslow) of you. Go to Gunforhire.com. The head instructor's name is Anthony Colandro and he is fabulous. There is a video on his front page that gives you an idea about his style. He's not a military or ex commando type and is a genuine likable, charismatic character that makes the class/range material a fun and enjoyable experience. I received my instructor certifications from him and he is a class act.

Shore Shot Pistol Range in Lakewood is worth a trip, you can shop and rent a few pistol for use in there indoor range. Saturdays are not the best days for asking lots of questions as the place is packed. Sundays are ok, but mid week is way better.

A friend of mine actually took me to Shore Shot last week. I paid for a gun rental and as long as you stay within the same caliber, you could try as many different models as you want (without paying anything extra). I got to try 6 different .45's. Great way to shop until I zero in on my final choice. Nice place and very helpful. Luckily I work not too far away... but I was hoping to possibly find something a bit closer to home. As you say, it is an addiction. Thank you.

Find a job in Tennessee there are few obstacles with firearms of any kind. Plus with your carry permit a 60 dollar course plus 115 dollars and about three months most (usually three or four weeks from application) and you are set to openly carry if desired or concealed carry, it is pretty simple really!

Putting aside a state transfer to Tennessee… If I may, think about a 9mm… has nothing to do with being new to handguns, it's all about economics. You can shoot 9mm ammo, at about half that of .45ACP. Forget any thought about reloading, which comes with enough upfront costs that it is better spent on time on target (at the range). The second reason to go 9mm, it is a user friendly round… low fatigue…
The best way to enjoy shooting is shooting…. So it's a commitment of time and resources. Not trying to divert your interest in an M&P 45... I'm just suggesting that you may find that more range time with a 9mm is better than a closet pistol.
I shoot every week, 9mm is my primary round, 22lr, then 45.

This state makes it such a pain... and wait times... sometimes I've been held up for 9-10 weeks. Where is the NRA?I hear you, Bob. I've begun to realize that after my first visit to the range. As you say, I need to find an economical way to spend as much time at the range as possible.
I got two handgun permits (not sure if I could wait 9 to 10 weeks). They are good for 90 days from date of issue (initially) which could be extended to 6 months. Upon which if not used they expire. In addition, I could only purchase 1 handgun every 30 days. The NJ way, as I'm sure you already know. So I'm researching my first choice of handgun(s), something fun to fire and economical, and then start looking at a long gun possibly. So my next few months seem to busy. In the mean time... It might be a good idea to start filing my next handgun permits.

Shore Shot has a good price on the M&P, I over paid for mine in Sayreville, hunting place by the bridge to South River. The guy was helpful one day then the next time I went another guy was an *** so I left and never went back. PM me I am going to shore shot on monday, opens for me (non member) @12. I just put in for 2 more permits in my town.
