He wanted to remind me that my concealed carry permit was about to expire. I am sure he is looking out for the county as far as the financial aspects go but really,,, how many Sheriffs do that ? He puts on CC classes a couple times a year and encourages everyone who is eligible to get a permit and carry. What a guy !

Our state law requires notification by the local authorities no less than 2 months before expiration. Maybe yours does too?

He could have not reminded you and then arrested you when you forgot, I could only imagine what you would think of him then, what a guy.

In our state notification is not required, and many counties so not do so. We do, because all three of the sheriff's I've worked for in this county for the past 23 years were strong believers in the 2nd Amendment. For the same reason, we offer the classes. Neither the fees for the classes nor the license cover our actual costs.

Andy would do it! Barney, eh, not so much!

Take this with a grain of salt: If I recall, Barney almost always carried, regardless that he only had one round in his pocket. He was cast as the over-reactive comic relief foil to Andy, and in the series, they made fun of him because he felt the need to be armed as a sworn LEO. I love that old series that I grew up with. BTW: Note that Otis was the town drunk, being the only married character in the regular cast. Rather than go home to face his wife after a drinking binge, he made the jail his second home and refuge.

In Northampton County PA we have a grace period. We are notified by mail prior. I have misseds renewal 2 times but made the grace periods.

Don't ever think you won't get caught carrying without a CCP. I ended up in the middle of an ATF with 2 Ultra carries on me. I have a CCP but the ATF wasn't real happy about me having two 45s on me.

I got a letter last Thurs.

In my county you can apply online for a renewal 90 days out. Mine expires in March, so I spent New Years Eve doing my renewal application. Got an immediate (automated) response with a tracking link.

My new permit was mailed out on the 11th, with a nice letter from the Sherriff, "if your current permit is not expired, continue using your existing permit until it expires, then switch over to your new one."

Easy as can be, the Boulder County Sheriff's office treats us really well. They follow up with an application to join the County Sheriffs of Colorado as an associate member.

I got a letter back in late November reminding me that my CWP was to expire in late January and that they needed at least 45 days to process my renewal. I had to pay with a check and lucky for me I still had some very old checks on top on my fridge. I sent it in the first week of December and got my letter to make an appointment to get my new photo the first week of January. I was in and out down at the DMV in less than 15 minutes with this new appointment only process.
I was thankful to be reminded and do not know if Idaho requires the state to send out a letter reminding you it takes some time to do the FBI background check. I mainly have the CWP to help speed up the purchase of firearms down at the gun store because Idaho passed a permit less concealed carry a few years ago.

In 2021, Tennessee eliminated its permit requirement for carrying concealed handguns in public spaces and, effective July 1, 2021, now generally allows anyone at least 21 years old to carry a handgun in most public spaces without a permit, either openly or concealed, as long as they are legally eligible to possess the handgun and are lawfully present in the place where they are carrying the gun.

Gotta luv Tennessee

Ps. No state income tax

Yes, my screen name is in honor of Otis Campbell. I'm a huge fan of the show. I could recite most episodes! Pure Americana!

I checked my CC license and it expired on 10-22-22 the Ar state police has always sent me a notice about a month before they expire I have had this since 1996 I guess I will fight them early on Monday morning. Jeff

I'll be getting the same letter as the OP in a couple months. If I remember right, you have a grace period after ours expires. I can't remember how long but it's pretty lenient. $20 or $25, for 5 years it's pretty good. Never had to take a test or firearm training. I don't know if it's all of PA that does it, but that's a real plus for living here. Now, the roads...

My sheriff also sends out a letter to remind on CC renewals. I'll admit that the first one I received after 5 years gave me a bit of a start when I looked at the return address and logo coming out of my mailbox. If I was still married and the lovely wife had brought it in to me, she would probably have said "WELL....WHAT have you done NOW !!" :)

I failed to notice that my concealed carry permit had expired, and the penalty charge each month amounted to almost as much as the renewal. B cause Missouri had gone to constitutional carry at this time. I said the heck with it because I don't travel anywhere except perhaps Arizona which is also constitutional carry
