Don't want to use any names just yet. This person has had my 1st model Schofield for 3 years come December. The work involved replacing repairing some parts but little to no work on the finish. There have been some extenuating circumstances but not enough to warrant a 33 month wait. He has recently stopped replying to my emails. I figure the revolver is worth at least $5k if he's done what he said he had done before communication blackout. I'm not sure what my options are as I live 2000 miles away. I haven't threatened him yet because he has a good reputation and is recommended here on this forum all the time but enough is enough. Other people have waited up to 18 months but had work done on the finish of their guns. Any advice, suggestions, etc. would be greatly appreciated. I just want my gun back before I die. Thanks!

I can't imagine what he is doing to it to make it worth 5K. Replacing parts and re-finishing it normally drops the value.

Call him up and talk to him.... don't be a dick about it. Just tell him your concerns and that it has taken longer then stated.... has it? Maybe... you can come to terms... if not ask for him to mail it back to you. If you don't get the gun back within a month write him a letter stating that you will be reporting him to the BATF, Better Business Bureau and other agencies as appropriate and that a lawsuit will be forthcoming.

Ask the resident attorneys, but IIRC (based on a problem with my boat and a canvas shop), the crime is 'Larceny by Conversion'.

Get an attorney local to the gunsmith.

What did he tell you when you first shipped it to him? What is he doing to it? If its a parts issue, something that old may take time to find. 3years is a loooong time though. The fact he's broken contact is indeed troubling.
I would ask that it be returned with a detailed bill of what has been done and square up if you agree. Write it off to experience and with the next smith, get it all up front in writing what's to be done and how long w/estimate.
Good luck

That's very true. I would think that someone else in the shop or a lawyer would have sown up loose ends by now. Of course, that all depends on what's happened and when.
Is it possible to do some kind of search in his home town? Newspapers, etc. ?

Many years ago I used a famous "Gunsmith" touted on this & other forums and he wrecked two of my best guns. Eventually he straightened most (but not all) of the problems out but left me holding the bag for TWO SETS of custom Ivory grips which he absolutely destroyed beyond repair. Needless to say that was the LAST TIME I ever sent a gun out to a GS for work and that is why I now do all my own work (except grips, bluing, plating & barrels). I went through months of aggravation, many letters and phone calls but eventually got the guns back.

Three years ago after 20 or so years of shooting those guns in SASS matches, I sent them to COLT for a compete new Royal Bluing and new Case Coloring. After that the guns went to Dan Chesiak for new Ivory's. Those two Colts cost me a fortune because of one lousy Gunsmith but now look better than the day I bought them. These guns were personally hand delivered to both Colt & Dan and picked up the same way.

Bottom line is even when GS's are touted and applauded on forums does not mean that they will do the right thing, be upstanding businessmen, or respond to letters and phone calls. Some are just mean spirited, obnoxious, and think they are a gift to the gun world.

If he won't respond to any of your emails I would send a registered (return receipt requested) letter to him stating that you want the gun back in a timely fashion, and you would like to personally talk with him. If you still don't hear back, I would call the ATF and file a stolen gun report. If he has not completed the work by now I would tell him to simply return the gun along with your money. Some of these "famous GS's" are real pieces of work! They charge ridiculous amounts of money and make you wait an absurd amount time.

I hope to get your gun back and fair much better than I did.
Good luck and keep us posted.

this brings up a good point, why do gs take so long,i had a garand i took to a well known gs here to get glass bedded,he told me when i dropped it off it would "be awhile" before he started, well 7 months later i was in his neck of the woods and dropped by to see what was going on as i had not heard a word from him,my M-1 was right where he set it behind the counter, even had a light coat of dust on it,i just took it back home and did it my self, also learned i wont do another one

3 years ...
some files, a vice, and a chunk of 4140 steel and you can make any part you need in less than 3 years ... well less than three months even if you only give it ten honest minutes a day if you cant stand the work.

either he's blown you off or something went horribly wrong .. get your piece back

Many thanks to all who replied. I'll give him one more chance to return the gun then do many, if not all, of the things you all suggested.

If you sent that revolver to Bob Munden, you're going to be waiting a looooong time....

Otherwise, I agree that you need to rattle his cage. Taking way too long is one thing, not responding to you is a big, big problem in my book. You need to send him a (certified) letter (make copies) demanding (in a professional, direct fashion) that he respond with delivering the services agreeded upon, or returning the gun immediately. Don't be shy about it, at this point it is way beyond acceptable business practices.

List the recourses (some good ones listed above...) that you will employ if he does not comply. Lawyers are very good with these things, or you could try it yourself first, and see how it goes.

Good luck!

I'm sorry to hear that, especially since it's a recommended and well respected GS.

Since he/her/them refuse to talk to you an Attorney is the only way to go. The Attorney needs to get your Schofield back as well as the Attorney's fees!
