Got a weird problem going on with my 2 Shields

The issue with penetrating oil and cartridges is a slippery one (see what I did there ). You might have 100 rounds survive being soaked and then have 100 where all of them get contaminated and won't work. It will all depend on how well they are sealed.

Even just pressing in the primer, with no sealant, can make a cartridge water tight. Then again, it might not. Only by applying a sealant can you be sure.

WD-40 reacts with the primer and causes it to not ignite. But it has to get to the primer. So, some might seep in at the crimp and not cause a single issue. It's worse is the primer is not sealed.

You gun doesn't need to dripping wet with lube and you don't need to lubricate your magazines. Clean yes, lube no.

While you shouldn't lube your magazines (running a silicone impregnated cloth through them isn't terrible), I have to ask. What ammo and what lube did you use? How much lube and how long were they loaded?

We tried soaking some carry ammo in WD-40 for up to a week and had no failures. It was hardly a scientific test though. We put 50 rounds in a cup and shot up 10 per day. With a weekend in the middle. This was with Federal SD ammo that when pulled, there is a black in color sealant on both the bullet and primer.

ETA: I am in no way condoning the use of any penetrating oil on a firearm nor that penetrating oil can't kill a primer or foul the powder, just that oil and that particular box of ammo had no issues.

They sat loaded since last Oct. So they sat for about 5mos. Ammo was a mix of Blazer and American Eagle. Both of which I have used for sometime for paper. As far as lube it was either WD-40 or silicone, not really certain. But it was just a touch. Didn't soak them. As I stated earlier ,after all the mags were emptied this weekend I reloaded and they all fired and cycled fine. Only explanation I can come up with.

It is one explanation, but it doesn't sound like you had enough in there to cause a problem.

Sounds like you're using ball ammo for carry. Excuse the thread drift for a sec. Unless you live in NJ you have better choices that you should consider for carry ammo. A good start would be to look at any ammunition that passes the FBI testing protocols. Blazer brass and American Eagle are both decent quality ball ammo but not my first choice for defensive ammo. IMO, 5 months is not too long to carry ammo, a lot of PDs carry the same ammo for up to a year with no problems.

Here's a scenario.....

Could one of the gun have a malfunction in the mechanism that holds the mag, and damage any mag that is used in it? That could account for both guns not working with all mags when all of the mags are used in both guns. Far fetched? Yeah, but I've been fooled too many times.

I only use the Blazer and AM. Eagle for paper not CCW. Wasn't just 2 duds it was 16. Sixteen mags all with weak fires and FTE and or stovepipes on the last round in each only. The loaded mags were in my ammo bag for the 5 months, indoors. And don't forget it was with 2 different Shields. Anyhow after empting those 16 mags and reloading them all is well. One of those mysteries that I may never be certain of what happened exactly.

This is with 10 different mags. S&W mags and Magpul brand. Both guns new in 2016. Brass looks fine. Guns are cleaned after every use. Round count is under 2500 rounds. I will try the 2 round suggestion.

magpul does not make shield mags do you have some fakes?

Sorry, they are a mix of S&W and " Pro Mag "magazines, not MagPul. And to JVSIII , they are brass cases not aluminum. Just came in from running another 50 rounds thru the guns and they are working flawlessly now.
