For about a year or two now one of the guns on my short list has been a M17. I wanted a classic six inch, six shot, standard barrel gun, no full lugs or 10 shooters for me, thank you.

A month or two ago I was mentioning this to a friend, and he said he had one he might be willing to part with. He said he would probably want @$400 for it. It seems that any I see in the used racks around here are going for more than that. Anyhow, we shoot Highpower Rifle together and this weekend was one of our matches, so I gave him a call yesterday and told him if he was still interested to bring it along today.

It is a 17-6 in pretty good condition. A turn line is the only wear I can see on it. I'm not very good at rating, but I would say excellent? It is a classic six inch blued six shooter, just what I want. Interestingly, SCSW says that the 17-6 model was the start of the full luggers, but there is a note that says "some early 17-6s reported without full lug." No box, papers or tools, and it came with a set of Hogue rubbers. So I say, "You said you want $400 for her?" He said "You're a friend, I'll take $375." I thought that was a fantastic price.

I think I did just fine. Since he gave me such a good price, I even gave him back the Hogues. I hate those grips, but he likes them and he has an L frame he could put them on. I have other K frame grips I can put on to shoot right now, but I think a classic beauty like this needs something special. Maybe some original S&W magnas, or then again I'm partial to Ahrends. Maybe I'll try their retro targets?

How did I do? I think $375 is a great deal on a K22.

I'll post pics as soon as my ammendment clears and I can get the gun. In my county of NYS, it should be within two weeks, hopefully closer to one.

I think that you did really well.

I bought a 17-6 last year in like new condition sans box, full underlug which I like for five and a half bills. :o

You should be embarrassed to ever look your friend in the eye again. You stole that gun!!! Around here, one that looks like it was run through a concrete mixer goes for about $800.(and up)
Boy am I jealous!!!

Glad that the consensus here is positive. Had one crackpot over on the "other" board tell me I overpaid since I didn't have the original S&W grips. I've got several sets of K frame grips that I can use right now, and I'll settle on on nice aftermarket set soon. As I see it, $375 got me a gun I can shoot right now. Even if I spend another $100 on grips, I think I'm still ahead.

I filed the amendment to my permit today, so hopefully I'll be able to get my new toy in about a week.

Great deal.

I paid more than that for this 17-6 which had alot of surface rust. What's the hangup about original grips? Sure they're nice to have. However most forum members change them to fit their mitts anyway. Eh?

I bought my 17-6 about a year and a half ago for about $500.00. It's the one in my avatar. At least a 98% gun and I love it. At $375.00 for a similiar M17 you in fact got a wonderful deal. You also owe your friend a good steak dinner.

Well, I picked her up today. Like I said in the original post, I gave the Hogue rubbers back to the sekker as I have no use foir them and he does. I put a pair of Targets I had laying around on in order to snap a few pics:

I was delighted that my friend still had the box, papers, and unopened tools. He can't find the original grips (which are essentially the same as the ones I put on) but he says if they turn up they're mine.

I'd say other than being filthy she was in pretty good shape. There is a turn line and a little muzzle blue wear

but otherwise looking good! Like I said, I paid $375 for it. I'll put some Packies on so I can shoot it tomorrow, but now I need to figure out how I want to stock her. I'm torn between magnas with a grip adapter or maybe some Ahrends Retro Targets.

What a beauty!! What a good friend!! Very nice. I know you're going to enjoy it.

Very interesting gun,
I have a Model 29-3 from what I am guessing is the same era as it has the same "PLUM" purple colored barrel.

The 17-5 transitioned into a heavy barrel and was also offereed in stainless steel.
The next transition (17-6) was the full underlug barrel.

The Model 18-4 was supposed to be the final 4" K22 taper barrel gun offered ,
The Model 17-5 was supposed to be offered in a 4" barrel configuration for those that wanted a shorter barrel K22.

Engine49guy,

I said in the original post, this is a 17-6. Apparently (according to SCSW) some 17-6s were made with the old style barrel. I didn't want a full lug.

Would love to see an open crane photo. Did you ever find out how many of this rendition were made?

That is one fine shooter for the price....ya did good, only thing is from now on when you buy your next K-22 you will feel like your overpaying!!:)....oh you WILL buy more...he he he

late model 17-4s transitioned into the heavier barrel and the 17-5 continued it,
Your 17-6 is probably transitional as it has the 17-5 heavy barrel,
The early 17-6's probably used up leftover 17-5 barrels.

Your barrel has a wider and thicker barrel rib almost like a Model 19 without the underlug.
Also has a longer ramp base.

Here is a picture of the barrels on a K22 outdoorsman, K22 post war Masterpiece then the K22 Heavy Masterpiece.
The photo at the bottom is your 17-6.

At $375 how'd you do? You should take your friend to dinner...a few times.

And that those dinners should include drinks and dessert...
