Two other things people do not take into consideration, is the shooters ability to put hits on target and second, the willingness to put hits on target. The "Fight or Flight Response".

Anyone who carries a handgun is potentially a gunfighter so they should be thinking that.

The late Jeff Cooper, USMC retired, developed a system that described the different possible levels of awareness based on color. Cooper's Color Codes of Awareness are divided into 5 possible categories, white, yellow, orange, red and black. Level white is one that no one should ever be in.

It is kind of hard to not be in condition white when you are stone-cold asleep. Other than that you can find that you can function for long periods of time in condition yellow. I worked in a fairly violent prison for 24 years and found I could function in Condition Yellow for 8-16 (or more) hours at a stretch with practice. It is a perishable skill and must be actively practiced. It isn't paranoid if they really are out to hurt you.

I’ve always slept with at least one bird dog in my bedroom. They take the watch while I get some winks. Sometimes they even sleep on the bed, much to my wife’s chagrin. After years of working nights on the job my sleep patterns are irregular to say the least. Keep your head on a swivel when you’re awake, let man’s best friend watch your 6 when you need a break.

If you are stone-cold asleep at 3:00 am and you are awaken by broken glass in the next room (wife and you are only occupants). How do you respond? Are you White - Black, or did you armed yourself in Orange - Red?

There's a video out there on YouTube that is Jeff Cooper explaining his color code. To the best of my understanding this is how he explained it.

White: Unaware. Not even a thought that you may have to defend yourself.

Yellow: General awareness that the world is not necessarily a safe place and you may have cause to defend yourself today.

Cooper then went on to state very specifically that you can live in "Condition Yellow" for the rest of your life.

Orange: Specific cause for concern. As Cooper put it "I may have cause to defend myself against that specific person today.

Red: Definite threat. The threat is engaging you specifically and you're making If/Then decisions. " If the threat crosses this line Then I'm going to draw". Right up to " If the threat crosses this line Then I'm going to shoot.

Black: I don't know if I ever heard Cooper say "Condition Black" in his video. But that's when all other options have been exhausted and you are engaging with deadly force.

Col. Jeff Cooper: Mental condition, Color codes - YouTube.

Having said that, I'm not sure what we're discussing here. I'm not sure where are the connection is between Cooper's color code and being willing to shoot.

Reminds me of those people with only tiny 2 bullet pocket guns. Dont train at all. Dont want to shoot anyone. Dont have the weapon to even engage in a gunfight. Condition White all over.

The affirmative southern defense comes to mind, " Your honor,
he needed shooting."

So in the purely speculative realm we are in, you wanted to
because he needed it.

Sgt. Rock, that is so very old, and as noted, not Col. Cooper's original design.

But, if you are not aware of your surroundings, while walking your dog, or jogging in the park, or eating dinner at Delmonico's (and your back is not to the door, yes?) , or parking your car in your own garage, well, lack of awareness can get you killed.....

There are. A few. But most don’t. If I had my way I’d reverse the traditional church building layout and have the preachers back to the entrance so mine isn’t.
