Got my first ever revolver (not first gun) and it is 686 Plus 4" :)
Good tips for the cleaning of stainless still and getting good grips would be very appreciated. What a quality, for sure S&W are the best on market revolvers!
It took me 1 month to get it on special order, it is not easy in NJ because stores are full of non popular models only. SW revolvers are for sure tough to get.

congrats! its a nice gun. i have one with a 2 1/2" bbl. and love it. it is a blast to shoot, even with full house magnum stuff. enjoy and for a first revolver, you made a fine choice.

CONGRATS ON YOUR ACQUISITION OF A GREAT REVOLVER ! ! ! THE 4 INCH MODEL 686+ IS ARGUABLY THE MOST VERSATILE REVOLVER EVER MADE. IF I WAS FORCED TO GIVE UP MY ENTIRE COLLECTION OF ARMS, SAVE ONE WEAPON, THIS IS THE ONE I WOULD KEEP………...

You have one of the best, if not the best .357 Magnum in our history.

It is a great, great gun. It will handle any FACTORY .357 load out there, and shooting .38 spcls will be like shooting .22s.

Get a good cleaning kit for revolvers, ballistol is a good cleaner and lubricant. Wipe it clean after that.

If you are interested in polishing, Flitz or Mothers Mag Wheel Polish, and shammies work really well. It just takes a few hours.

Regarding grips, there are tons of them out there.
Altamont
Ahrends
Hogue
Kurac

Enjoy your new gun, it is a fine weapon.

Just picked up my 4" 686 two days ago. I'll be putting Ahrends retro combat grips on mine. Regarding the cleaning - I generally use CLP on most my guns.

I got Ahrends grips and also ordered led removal patches, I have tons of different oils including very popular slide glide etc. Thanks!

The only thing better than a four inch 686 is several of them in different variations. However the four inch is King! Yea done good. :^)

I had a 6" 686. Really liked it but thought it a little muzzle heavy. Traded it off and bought a 4" 686+. The revolver perfected!
To clean I break it down and hose with cheap brake cleaner from the auto parts store. A bronze brush takes care of what little leading I get and I lube with CLP or Rem oil.
My favorite grip is the Hogue rubber with no finger grooves or texture. Not the prettiest grip but great at the range.

Here's my baby with her new shoes. Agree with all above. While my sentimental favorite revolver is still my Model 19, this one would certainly be a contender for "Best in Class".

Just dumb luck led me to my first revolver, 686 4". Wish I was that lucky more often. It has started my love of wheel guns. Have not bought a bottom feeder since.

Welcome to your new addiction :D

I see you have the "evil" hollow points! Nice gun!

James

Thanks, what do you expect me to use at home? :) I do use shotshell cci loads in my other pistols (first 3-5 rounds in each mag) but I can't find them for this revolver.

Guns are very addictive, I am already in research for another one. :) Not sure if I will buy another revolver soon however, it might be just 686 alone for long. I like 686 look and design but I am still in love with automatic pistols like Sig or HK or CZ or ... :)
