Their letter only quotes the barrel installation?

My understanding is that it is S&W policy to not change the finish on the model 28. They may be doing the maintenance on it prior to installing the barrel, because it would need to be done to correctly establish the B/C gap. You might give them a call to explain the correspondence.

I called before shipping and there was nothing said about not refinishing it in nickel..........
I plan to call monday.
They were closed today

I'm interested in the barrel replacement charge.

and the cost of a mod 18 barrel, if anyone can get me in the ballpark.

I found a new barrel (still had factory sticker on it) on Gun Broker
S&W charging 72.00 + 14.00 return shipping
(with note barrel has to be turned to open cyl gap)

Vito is a craftsman.

I do not think that Smith & Wesson will do brushed or matte nickel. Only factory finishes. Standard and high polished blue and high polished nickel. It seems to me that I've seen M28s factory refinished in the high polished blue instead of the satin blue normally used on the M28 but again, the new finish must be something offered as a standard finish by the factory.

Brushed nickel was listed on web site
Vito was out again today
I have more nickel than blue wheel guns
Also being in FL I think it will hold up better

Spoke with Vito today
The omission of the refinish was corrected
He reports the refinish dept is not very busy at this time
I am looking at a 4-5 week turn around

"Brushed nickel was listed on web site"

Actually, it is bead blasted and not brushed. At any rate, I'll be dipped 'cause I don't recall seeing that on the old site or it being offered as a standard finish. Well, learned something new.

Bruce,
I well remember a few years ago that S&W was advertising in various gun magazines for their new state of the art facility, in which they could do any type of finishing work needed. They were quite proud of it as I recall, and even listed many of the services they would be offering including the aforementioned refinishing of almost any type, and lots of other machine/milling work.

I have wondered lately why they stopped advertising it after reading some of the posts here in which it seems that many members don't know about this. They were also doing work for other firearms manufacturers.

I hope this helps some.:)
BTW- I have always liked your avatar. I watch old reruns of MV every day.

Beautiful gun - thanks for sharing pictures.
That should last a lifetime.............please don't ever throw away the invoice for the job.
20-30 years down the road, if that gun changes hands - some HP collector will be thrilled to have a Factory workorder/documentation :)

I never got a invoice
1st one did not list refinish
Nothing was returned with it today

I've had several worked on by the factory now, and they never have provided an invoice with any of mine. I called and asked then about it the last time, and they said they just don't do it.

VM is right though, especially with that one. I would be very insistant on having one for it.
