Got Vaxxed!

Yeah, shingles sucks. I got the shingrix a couple years ago. First dose kicked my butt - body aches, fever, lethargy. Second was a piece of cake.
I got the shingrix a couple years ago myself. Same experience. Immediately after the first dose, my bride and I went for a walk at a local nature center. We were about a mile from the car when I suddenly started feeling awful. Stopped to rest a few times on the way back, and it just kept getting worse.

Advice to anyone considering the shingles vax. Have a plan to put your feet up and chill ASAP.

Fall again, and my wife and I drifted down to our local pharmacy and got flu, COVID, and pneumonia vaxxed today. Got the shingles Vax earlier in the summer and will get the second shot in 30 more days.

For those of you who haven't had shingles,
I'd suggest you avoid them. Got shingles earlier this year that started under an eyelid and went up onto my bald head in a slanted line. Truly annoying!

Right on about shingles, even if you have to pay for them yourself get the shots. I got hit hard many years back before the shots were available and my description of shingles is--'' Your skin is on fire and they are using a ice pick to put it out''!

I will get the flu shot as I have got that one since the 1970s, as far as the Covid one I respectfully decline!

Nope; the pharmacy uses the (voluntary) state vaccine registry to make sure you're getting consistent brands. And yes, I got all 3, one at a time. That's how we've done these shots for a few years now.

Added: I forgot my shot card when going a-contracting overseas, so they gave me nine (yup, 9) vaccines in one sitting. Surprisingly had no ill aftereffects and have never worried about more than one at a time since.
Reminds me of decades ago going down the line with people on both side shooting nail guns in both arms. I didn't ask what they were for. Someone told me it was for foreign diseases anywhere we might be deployed.

Significant Increase in Excess Deaths after Repeated COVID-19 Vaccination in Japan

Abstract

Although Japan recorded the world's highest rate of COVID-19 messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) vaccination doses per capita, COVID-19 cases and deaths exploded after the emergence of the Omicron variant, followed by a significant increase in excess deaths in 2022 and 2023. Although several hypotheses have been proposed to explain these phenomena, the truth remains to be established because sufficient studies and data disclosures have not been conducted to adequately investigate the possible contribution of mRNA vaccines. The causes of the excess deaths from not only COVID-19 but also other factors after repeated mRNA vaccinations must be elucidated, given this could provide valuable information to help combat future infectious disease outbreaks.

COVID-19 vaccination, all-cause mortality, and hospitalization for cancer: 30-month cohort study in an Italian province

I should probably get the shingles vaccine. I got Chickenpox in my mid/late 20s and it leveled me worse than any flu I've ever had. I'll be getting the flu shot today, probably. When your wife is a teacher, you have to be careful about what she brings back from the petri dish labeled "School".

Ummmmmm can I just not get the vaccine? Do I have to endure the hot wax ?

I am high risk due to my kidney disease. When I started the transplant program (4/21) they had a list of vax to make sure I got, some of which were really arcane, and some of which are usually for people a lot younger than me. My pharmacist looked at me like a chicken watching card tricks and had a hard time getting some of them. The whole point was to make sure that my system could get up to speed before transplant.

I had the transplant 7/17, and the surgery and overall process were not bad. Turns out that most of the time they don't have to cut abdominal muscle; there is a spot where to muscles meet and the kind of open them like a book. Having had abdominal surgery and a vivid memory f the suck, that was the biggest source of my anxiety. The main issue is that I will be immune compromised for the rest of my life, so some things are going to be delayed: I have to be 6 months downrange for a flu (etc) vax, cataract surgery, and any possible return to the gym instead of training at home. I have had six covid shots/boosters with no negatives.

Last year I did three shots at once (Covid, I think flu, and RSV). That was DUMB. They beat the hell out of me for a couple days. The anti-vax mindset has presented some serious Public Health problems; while I am appreciate the concerns about the Covid vax (I had some too until I had a detailed chat with one of my docs), generalizing them to other vax has resulted in among other things, serious measles outbreaks. My sibs are older than me, and the risks they faced in school were staggering and of course far worse than mine. I hate needles and that is the worst part of vax for me.

One of the problems presented by the unvaccinated is not obvious, but is well demonstrated by Covid. More sick people means more mutations and greater net risk.

One of the problems presented by the vaccinated is obvious, and is well demonstrated by Covid - the vaccines do NOT prevent infection.

COVID-19 vaccination, all-cause mortality, and hospitalization for cancer: 30-month cohort study in an Italian province

I don't have a dog in this fight, and I fully respect each person's right to make their own health decisions.

Nevertheless, the characterization of the first study was deceiving. From the article's abstract:

" The subjects who received SARS-CoV-2 vaccination showed a substantial reduction in all-cause mortality, and a risk of cancer hospitalization that varied by infection status, cancer site, and the minimum lag-time after vaccination. Given that it was not possible to quantify the potential impact of the healthy vaccinee bias and unmeasured confounders, these findings are inevitably preliminary."

I remember all the shots the Corps said I had to get before deploying to Vietnam and feeling like a dartboard afterward. :(

Without getting political, and speaking as a former pharmacist and a retired military person who took his share of vaccinations, avoiding vaccinations is about the worst choice an American can make. So the following is a public service to the friends on this Forum.

Until someone proves a connection between vaccines and autism, no child should start school without an MMR shot. I know that's the current allegation from RFK, Jr., but I have not seen proof yet. Same for allegations, as discussed above, of Covid vaccine side effects.

Currently, these vaccines are all available:

COVID-19 Vaccine: Protects against the coronavirus and its variants

I can get a little political here; I don't think the mods will mind a little jab at the government (pun intended). The mandates and shutdowns were hogwash, Big Government insanity, and those negative effects on children are still being felt. Nonetheless, the efficacy of the MRNA vaccines, as a general thing. was sufficient to save people, or shorten duration, or alleviate the severity of the disease, etc. However, SURPRISE SURPRISE!!!!!!! The MRNA vaccines can be avoided. I told my doctor I would only take a Covid shot if it was like a flu shot, attenuated viruses, not related to genetics. I figured that was a good challenge. He looks me straight in the eye and he says, "We have that now". DAYUMMM!!! Foiled again. Kinda sorta. So I took the shot last year and if he says take it again this year I will.

Influenza Vaccine: Annual shot to prevent seasonal flu.

If you get the flu this year you'll never forget it. You want to risk your life? Not my problem. Play anti-vaxxer all you want. You're wrong.

Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) Vaccine: Combines protection against three viral diseases.
These are childhood vaccinations. If you got them, you're probably good to go, but if your doctor recommends updates/boosters do it. You adults REALLY DO NOT want these illnesses and if you are a Baby Boomer you are too old to play games with such diseases.

Tdap Vaccine: Protects against tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough).
While the latter two illnesses are famous for affecting children, this is not the time of your life to get them. And, in this crew, with all of the tools and such handled by shooters, and being outdoors, as well, not being protected against tetanus is beyond foolish. I'd call it stupid.

HPV Vaccine: Prevents human papillomavirus-related cancers.
It's not just for the ladies. Here's the potential list of cancers:
Female:

cervical
vaginal
vulvar

Everyone:

anal cancer
certain head and neck cancers, such as throat and back of mouth cancers
genital warts
Hepatitis B Vaccine:

Protects against hepatitis B virus infection. Anyone can get it - you won't like it!

Shingrix:

For Herpes Zoster (Shingles) - - see above comments from those who got shingles. The odds are that in your childhood you were exposed to chickenpox, and that virus lingers forever so, even if you were never sick with that illness, your friends or siblings brought it home or to school. Take the doggone shot and don't be a chicken! Sorry - pun intended.

There are many more, such as Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), polio, smallpox, dengue, yellow fever, ebola, cholera, rabies, etc. Some of those are required for travelers. Always ask your doctor.

If you choose to be an anti-vaxxer, make sure you actually have a good reason, as opposed to I hate the government, or Big Pharma sux, or some other idiocy fed to you by the media or politicians.

End lecture.

Have a fine Navy day!

Ya know, the more of these threads I read, the more I think it's less about control, mandates, or the efficacy of vaccines. The tone of many posts says to me that there is a large proportion of the membership who are terrified of needles.

A secondary complaint is that some have experienced a bit of a reaction to a vaccine. Sure, it's not nice to feel "off" for a day, but compare that with the disease you are trying to avoid. It's a matter of realizing the real perspective.

What ever my doctor tells me to get, I get based the assumption that she knows more about medicine than I do. Of course, the shots may have been the reason that both of my children were born naked, or why my truck broke down shortly after getting stuck. My kids, who are now middle aged, got all the the shots that were reccomended, even if they went kicking and screaming. (which my daughter did once.) They are both healthy and prosperous.

I got all of the Covid shots, and I didn't get Covid, nor did I grow any extra apendages, or to my knowledge, lose my mind. The flue or pneumonia would probably kill me, so I get them too. If they had a shot to grow hair on my head, or make me rich or young, I would get 'em in a heartbeat.

It's a free country, and everyone has a right to decide what they are going to do concerning their bodies and their health. Amen.

Just One Problem: No one in any society can focus only on the Individual Good while ignoring the Greater Good.

Here's an example: The movie Casablanca is about a guy who has to get over his own personal concerns and start thinking about the greater good. Otherwise, the Nazis will win the war.

"I'm no good at being noble, but it doesn't take much to see that the problems of three little people don't amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world." — Rick Blaine

"Each of us has a destiny. For good or for evil." — Victor Laszlo
