Frame and cylinder shortened to .45acp length. Everything else the same, except the rear of the cylinder flat, as no need for tricky stuff as no Colt or shot shells.

I believe this already exists as the Model 325PD, although my example has a titanium cylinder so it's significantly lighter than the Governor. Also, the 625-10, which has a steel cylinder and a scandium alloy frame was made several years ago. It's a snubby with a 2 inch barrel.

The 625-10 was close, the frame is too long. The 325 has adj sites and the frame and cylinder are longer than necissarily long. There weren't enough of the 625-10s to make them very available.

I've often thought that this would be an ideal package. The Governor always seemed a bit like a gimmick to me, but they seem to sell a boatload of them. So what do I know? The C&S sights on the NG 325 require a awkwardly tall front sight, and the 625-10 remains a bit "cosmetically challenged" to my eyes. A blued, Air-Lite .45 ACP with fixed sights and a barrel profile similar to the Governor would be just about the bee's knees. They could call it the Lieutenant Governor. Just a thought...

The 325 NG is as close as it will get, and based on scarcity and used market prices the Gov is a very suitable, and economically feasible, stand in. The Gov's overall dimensions aren't much bigger than the NG, and it does have multi-caliber capabilities. S&W had a good idea with the NGs, but the price point was too high for the masses, and the purists among us weren't keen on the tall sites. With the right holster, the Gov makes for a rather practical .45ACP carry gun, and is the best we can hope for at present.
