I've been to Sudbury a few times but it's been awhile. I can see why you'd want to live there as it's pretty country. I'm a sailor and keep my boat on the other side of Lake Huron. I've taken it to Canada a couple times to Georgian Bay to your south but never to your North Channel unfortunately.
My cousin from London, Ontario worked the mines near you putting himself through college years back, tough work for strong young backs.
I belong to a couple Canadian gun boards and understand you can own handguns with permit over four inch barrels and a range membership still. Sounds like your gun laws are being changed now to your favor and hope you'll have some new S&W in the near future for show and tell here.
At least you can own the short barrel AR-15s we're not allowed here.
As I said to Enfield, it is a small world...when the Mrs. and I were on Mackinac two summers ago we had a conversation with a gentleman who sailed in a regatta between Mackinac and Manitoulin. A few days later, we were in Birch Run and I had a conversation with the saleslady at the Columbia store and it turns out she knew this fellow personally. That was quite funny.
Do you post on either Canadiangunslingers or Canadiangunnutz? It's interesting to note that in terms of discussions about self defense, on the Canadian boards it's all esoteric and hypothetical compared to the little I've already read here. Now, you have to understand, the law says we are allowed to use a firearm to defend ourselves, however, the regulations stipulate that said firearm must be completely unaccessible, under lock and key and unloaded at all times...to maintain otherwise is to invite a stay as a guest of the federal government in one of their zero star con motels.
As far as Smiths go, I have a number of items in my personal collection. Unfortunately, my taste in Smith revolvers leans to the shorter barreled specimens. These have been classed as prohibited and no new 4" or shorter handguns can be imported into the country for us peasants. I already had some in my possession when this law came into effect, and so I'm grandfathered in terms of possessing them. However, the ultimate fate of my 4" and under guns and all the rest up here is the blast furnace upon the demise of their owners...right now, the only bright star for gun owners is the possible end of the long gun registry. Handguns and black rifles will continue to be registered and their use limited to government sanctioned ranges. Oh, and the inane magazine capacity restrictions will still apply...10 rounds for centrefire handguns and 5 rounds for semiauto, centre fire long guns.
On a more positive note, I'd like to thank everyone for welcoming a newbie as warmly as they have...I look forward to learning and contributing to the board!
