Is Murphy's oil soap good for this job?
If not, what works best without doing any harm?
I forgot to mention that these are wood, in good shape, just dirty and darkened.
Ok, please excuse me. I checked the linked threads below and read where Murphy's is good to use.

I've got some Tung oil so that's what I'm using.
I plan on one coat and wipe it right off, then a second and let it sit for about five minutes and wipe it down.
This is after the Murphy's of course.

Jessie,

I have used Murphy's Oil Soap for cleaning two sets of S&W grips/stocks. Don't recall the proportions but let's say it calls for 1 cup solution to 1 gallon of water. You only need about 1 qt. of water so use 2 oz. of soap. An old toothbrush works well for scrubbing. My personal option to let them air dry at least overnight. Depending on the age of what you are washing DO NOT be surprised how little of the original finish is left to remove. Most of what remains will be on the butts and around the horns. Best of luck, hardcase60
