Grip suggestions for 686-4

I recently purchased a nice 686-4 4” that I’m very pleased with except for the grips. It came with what I think was a standard stock Pacmyer hard rubber grip back in the day. I don’t have large hands and these Pacmyer grips along with a square butt are too big for me, don’t feel good, and l’m looking for something better.

I do like the standard rubber grips that came on my 686-6, they fit my hand well and are comfortable. I am also pretty happy with the laminate wood grips that came on my 3” 686-6 deluxe.

I did order some new finger groove Hogue mono grips for square butts and I screwed that up thinking I was getting soft rubber but I ordered nylon by mistake. I feel like it doesn’t matter what hand size you have, these nylon grips are terrible.

Does anyone have any suggestions for grips for a square butt 686 frame that feel more like a round butt? Material doesn’t matter that much to me, but I do like the look of wood.

Please advise.

Hogue makes solid grips for a Square Butt K/L frame... decent fit and finish and options for wood type.

I'm an oddity in that I prefer rubber grips for "daily use" and range sessions, and only install wood stocks/grips for pictures, ha!

Forum members here can and hopefully will show you some super nice options, as stocks/grips are SO important for a revolver.

I have a 686-4 and I put VZ R2S conversion grips on it. Very happy with the fit and feel. Enjoy it so much , I did the same for several of my other S&W revolvers

I like Hogue rubber grips. Not a fan of Pachmayr.

I have wood Hogue finger groove grips on a 627-5 that I really like.

IIRC, Houge made these for S&W, but the Houge replacement grips are very similar minus the S&W logo and the speed loader cut out for the right panel, at least the current ones are that I'm aware of.
I like these factory Houge's on this 686-4+...
In fact, I like the Houge rubber grips I've had on J, K/L, N/Z, X, etc.

These are wood Hogue grips on a 627-5. The rubber grips are also Hogue.

I also typically put rubber Hogue grips on my revolvers. Mine are for shooting, and not for show. I find that the hogue grips are an almost perfect fit for my hands.

I do have some larger KSD root walnut grips for my M&P R8. It's my only fancy-ish gun.

The top gun is my TRR8 with stock grips. The lower one is my R8 with the wood grips. That's a picture I took to also show off my new holsters as well from Simply Rugged.

Same as any Smith. Elk, Moose or Stag. Throw in a TGrip if you’re feeling fancy.

I like a lot of different grips, and for different reasons. Hogue and Altamont (who makes a lot of the factory Smith grips) are my favorites of the currently available grips. However, the palm swell of the Hogue grip is just a litte big for me ( have thick hands, but short fingers) and my fathers old Colorado State Patrol duty gun (also the first gun I ever carried in LE) had a weird set of grips that for a long time I couldn't find. They were made by Rogers Grips, not the current Rogers Grips, but I believe his name was Bill Rogers. He later sold the patent to Safariland and they made the grips for a couple of years before they were discontinued. They pop up for sale on eBay, Gunbroker, and on the forums from time to time. As the pictures show, they were available in black and brown (a couple of different styles) for Square and Round butt. The early ones didn't have a medalion as I believe. They also made grips for other makes and models.

The grips supplied with my 686 no dash are Hogues. I think that a wraparound /Uni-grip would mitigate recoil but they aren't much on looks.

Not sure if you can find them, but the wood combats are the bees knees its legs and its arms. At least for my hand-size I will never find a better fit.
