My "new" 3904 is sweet. Like it a lot.

But I'm wondering about grips. Looked for some Hogue rubber grips and there don't seem to be any on their web site. Lots of nice wood, but I was looking for something more "economical."

Didn't see any Pachmayrs in rubber either.

Does anyone know if anyone makes them (used to make them?) or is it wood or the plastic S&W ones I have on there now with grip tape. (Which work just fine, but I thought I'd upgrade a bit...don't mind the extra width all that much.)

Looks to me that you are out of luck for a 3904. They only show them for the compacts like the 3913 and similar or the double-stack 5904 series.
I'd suggest the 5904 grips and slice from the back area until they are narrow enough, but that might well be an impossible task.
Another possibility is rubber grip material. Most of the companies (usually on eBay) that sell those rubber stick-on sets that are cut to fit guns like Glock or the M&Ps also sell it in uncut sheets of different sizes. I looked at one last night or the night before that was 12"x12" for $19.95 by GripOn. Traction Grips also sells a sheet 4.5"x6" for $10.95. An eBay search for either company should get you where you want to go if that ends up your decision. Good luck!

GerSan: I had some grip sheet material in the "stuff" box and that's what's on the plastic grips now. It works just fine. And I just put Hogues on my 3953 and they do the job. Was hoping for the same for the 3904 but I guess I'll 'invest' some grip $$$ for another gun. Thanks for the info.
