Looking to replace original rubber Hogue grips that came with my S&W 629-5 Camfour 2 5/8".

I believe its a round butt N frame. Thinking of going with wood combat style with S&W logo similar to this one...

Hoping someone could ID this grip for me and maybe point me to a good source. Also, would certainly appreciate some suggestions for good alternatives. Not looking for anything super dressy. Just good quality grips.

I have Ahrends Retro Banana Grips on my two Camfour guns (629-5 and 629-6) Unfortunately Ahrends is out of business now. The Lew Horton 629-3 Carry Comp (AKA Mag Comp) has Hogue grips.

The Camfour guns came with the same grips you show in your first photo. The Lew Horton Carry Comp came from the factory with the S&W N frame, round butt finger groove targets, which is what
you show in your second photo.

Thank you Bill! Beautiful set you got there!

I would prefer to go with something that has finger groves. Best I can tell... I am looking for something like this or similar Smith & Wesson N Frame Smooth Goncalo Alves Wood Combat Grips, Round Butt

There seems to be lots of variations on this style and without a part number I am having a bit of difficulty finding the exact grips.

Factory S&W would be optimal but I would be ok with a high quality alternative.

DeepBlue, I have a 3" round-butt 629, bought from a Forum member years ago. I believe it's a Lew Horton gun, and it came with S&W factory finger-grooved combat grips. I have those grips, or copies of them, on almost all my Smith revolvers, and I've found that they work very well. A close second choice would be Hogue wood grips...very comfortable.

Original Smith grips are getting really pricey. Unless you want that brand, I think I would look for or commission a set made by Culina...they are works of art, and exact copies of the factory product.

Right now, Culina has two pair of round-to-square conversion grips in stock for sale...link below.

You can also post a Want to Buy ad here...perhaps someone will have something you want that he's willing to part with.

Good luck! :)

A nice set of factory combats dresses a 3" 629 very well. Here's a photo of my 629-3 Carry Comp II wearing combats:

I'm curious about something: How effective is the Power Port on that 629?

I have several S&W revolvers in .357/.38 that have the Power Port, and it's pretty good at taming recoil. I also have a 3" plain-barrel 629 that is a beast to fire...hence my question.

If you ever want to sell that 629, please let me know...thanks.

Great question but I'm afraid I can't answer that from experience, LOL. This one came to me unfired and I like to keep my nicer/rarer pieces in unfired condition.

But I am sure it would be equally beastly to shoot than your 3" 629, albeit with less muzzle rise.

Having shot lots of rounds on my modern 357 Carry Comp, and also the 2.5" slab barrel 686 PC as well, the comps do make a significant difference in controlling muzzle rise.

Cheers,
686PC

I have a set of finger grooves on the Carry Comp now as that's what came on it. I personally don't like them as they don't fit my hands, hence the Ahrends which do fit.

A agree that the Arhrends retro bananas look good as an alternative on the N frame snubbies, they are harder to find than combats. Here are a couple samples on my 627-5 and 625-3.

If Jennifer and John only made some banana grips like those posted by WCCPHD, perfected by Ahrends, I would buy a few. And checkered? A few more.

As far as combats, J&J make equal or better examples of the originals, imo, and cost less. But for those wanting originals, nothing less will do.

Me and you both.

I found a pair of Ahrends square butt and turned them into round. Super comfortable, nice looking and I like having a little flare on the bottom for a more secure feeling.

Beautiful grips all around on this thread!

I actually had a generic set of wood combat grips on this one for a while. Felt like they were too slick, hence returned back to OEM rubber Hogue grips.

I am not super particular as far as the manufacturer, and would be a happy with a high quality aftermarket set. I would prefer one with a S&W logo though.

I actually took this 629 out to the range today along with my 70's production Model 27 with 3.5" .357 mag. Both are oem, hence no ports. Shooting them side by side, made me realize that .357 has only about a quarter of muzzle blast, recoil, and boom of 629. I don't think a port will help much with those, thought it may tame the muzzle flip marginally.

But, I don't mind it at all, it is a short barreled .44mag after all. Cleared 2 positions on either side of me while I was shooting though.

I considered selling it a few times from time to time, not because I don't love shooting it. Feel bad that I haven't really shot it much last bunch of years due to ammo cost and availability and I typically dump anything I don't shoot as I absolutely detest clutter. The other problem is that I could never figure out what would be a good price for one given that these are a bit scarce. Prices seem to range from "oh I'll give you $300 for this clunky old smith revolver" to high to crazy high!
