After a year long search I found a 629 that fit the selection criteria. No dash, doesn't neet to be shiny but not scratched/scarred, SN that placed it in early to mid 1981 for sentimental reasons.

Now the search begins for grips. I am not a fan of the factory target grips.

Attached please find a pic of my 686 with Ahrends. Kim, of course, is not taking orders so I need to look used/pre-owned or look for something else. This is pretty much what I like but I am looking around to make sure I don't miss something I might like as well if not better.

Ahrends sets the quality minimum for appearance, fit, and finish.

Eagle combat or finger position grips look good.

What else should I look at?

Thanks!

If you can find them on eBay, my vote is for ahrends I when
Them on most of my smith wheel guns. They are my favorites for multiple reasons, really like the way they fit my
Hands.

I'm a big fan of the Eagle Secret Service grips. I purchased four sets last year, all Select grade rosewood, with nickel hardware. Average cost was $270 each, so not an inexpensive choice.

I also like Hogue Hardwood grips, as they are available with either full fingergrooves, single fingergroove, and no fingergroove, in several wood varieties. And they are very affordable. Some folks don't like the mounting method, but I'm fine with it.

There is a stirrup that fits on the butt of the grip frame, held in place by the pin that normally is used to position a standard grip. Then the Hogue grip is mounted by aligning the grooves inside the grip with the grip pin in the frame, and then sliding the grip upward until it seats at the top.

This video on youtube provided by Brownell's gives a demonstration on how to install the Hogue monogrips. I hope you find it helpful

Keep an eye on the classifieds here. I bought a few sets of Ahrends here recently. I also like John Culina's stocks.

I've bought Ahrends both here and Ebay recently. N grips seem to me up for sale more often than K/L, mostly Tactical Combats like your 686. They aren't $100 anymore (double that or more) but are the single best fit for my hand I've found in production grips...used to be production, anyway...

I tend to find more of the round butt sets of N frame as opposed to the combat square butts. I have a few sets of each.

Wood is pretty, but I like good old rubber Pachmayr Presentation grips for shooting magnum rounds.

I installed Ahrends target grips on my 4" 629. They're wide to distribute recoil, and have minimal taper for better grip retention compared to factory grips. I was fortunate to get coco bolo grips before that wood was designated endangered.

I put Crimson Trace grips on a 3", which I carry in the woods, when west of the Mississippi. The pain is only temporary, compared to becoming a bear's lunch.

I like Ahrends but also really like Hogue Hardwoods and how their finger-groove grips fit my hand. They offer many options with or without grooves, though, as well as multiple wood species, checkered/not checkered, etc...
