Grooves in .38 Barrel

It's a very sloppy cut forcing cone. If it bothers you enough contact them and see what they say.

Those are tool marks in the forcing cone. I doubt they will affect accuracy, but they will surely contribute to fouling. I would get a hold of Smith and email them that picture, they may want you to send the gun back.

I called S&W and they said its from the laser and doubts having fouling problem but i can send gun in for review if i want to....can you see the carbon under the forcing cone on the alum matte frame?....any advise to safely remove it?....i tried hoppes elite to no avail

News to me if they started using a laser to cut the forcing cone. Still looks rough as all get out though. I would send it in if for no other reason than if you ever want to sell it someone might turn up their nose at it.

They use a clear coat finish over the aluminum frame and if you use anything harsh you will eat some of it off. It's a given that finish will at some point show some wear. Carbon usually needs something to soak to clean it. You won't damp it and then scrub it clean. It has to set for a bit first. As long as it's kept to a minimum though I wouldn't worry about it. Wipe the whole thing down with an oily rag and that is nine times out of ten clean enough unless you have leading. FYI, lead bullets in these very light guns like to jump crimp. Just keep an eye out for it.

I just sent a 637 back for pretty much the same issue. They replaced the barrel.

Here's the link.
