I mean this in a polite way....but before you sit back and take a breath and think things just might be OK, you might want to spend some time and read the bill.

You'll be surprised at what is hidden in it.....kind of like that dangerous nobama health care **** legislation where they are just now finding **** that was buried in the fine print. I've spent some time reading through S. 649 and you would be surprised how fast YOU can become a felon. Being able to keep your 30 round mags or rifle doesn't mean squat when you become a felon and so are prohibited from owning a firearm (assuming you also didn't take the detour trip through prison).

HOW TO BECOME A FELON IN 1 SIMPLE STEP! (please read all of it)

On March 21st, Senator Harry Reid (D-NV) introduced Senate Bill 649 (S. 649) under the deliberately misleading title of the "Safe Communities, Safe Schools Act of 2013," and is attempting to bring it to the Senate floor for a vote as quickly as possible. By all accounts, he has also promised Senator Diane Feinstein (D-CA) a vote on her proposed ban on semi-automatic firearms and standard capacity magazines as an amendment to S. 649.

The true subject of S. 649 is the requirement to report all firearms transfers to the federal government via "universal background checks." In reality S. 649 is proposing the universal registration of all firearms and their owners. As history has repeatedly shown us, and is currently being demonstrated in New York, registration is the prelude to confiscation.

While the proposed legislation contains limited exceptions for transfers, such as between family members, a little digging shows that you would be committing a federal felony if you:
• Leave town for more than 7 days, and leave someone else at home with your firearms;
• Lend a firearm to a friend to take shooting or to go hunting;
• Loan a firearm to a family member if they live at a different residence;
• Hand a firearm to someone at a gun club which is not a shooting range;
• Teach someone to shoot on your own land, if you hand them the firearm; or
• Fail to report a firearm as lost or stolen within 24 hours.

S. 649 is unacceptable in any form and compromise is not an option. This bill must be stopped!

Oh, don't worry, I know we're not out of it yet. Good to know that some people in congress have some sense about it though. It's a pretty obvious charade on their part to push it through without the most controversial parts, just so they can still get a chance to vote on those later. If they hadn't taken them out, it never would have passed at all, and they never would have gotten their chance. Still nice to see a little sun behind the clouds though. I'll have to read through the bill when I get a chance.

Exactly....and about 99.9% don't even know what is buried in the bill....except for those that drafted it.

You gotta love it....so my wife and I decide to go back to Minnesota to take care of some business regarding where our new home will be built....a two week vacation. I fly my mother-in-law down to house sit....and so she can visit her great-grandchildren at the same time. 7 days later, I'm a felon because I didn't transfer each and every gun to her via a FFL holder. The bill doesn't say mother-in-law....it uses nice terms like transferee and transferer and exception clauses that reference other laws currently in effect. So you start digging and find out that there is a 7 day period where I can be away from my firearms in my house...then I'm a felon because my gray haired 70+ mother-in-law is now "in charge" of them and they don't belong to her.

Yeah...it is scarey....just a little bit. So...get on the phone and call your Senators and tell them hell no on S. 649....throw it out the door!

It is meant as a compromise to "protect" gun owners, immediate destruction of "proceed" checks. It almost sounds "reasonable" till you realize that inside the bill are similar restrictions . Contact your Senators, levin/ stabenow in MI have heard from me many times. We need to make sure that " reasonable Senators" are not convinced to hurry up and "vote" like the obamacare. Many people are now just learning what is in it and the do not like it. Call/Email Be Safe,

Senators Levin and Stabenow have already heard from me... repeatedly. Levin is a lost cause, in bed with Feinstein, and almost as ignorant. Stabenow is a bit better (And smarter). My Representative, Mike Rogers, seems to be in the right place on this issue, though I haven't heard directly back from him on this. (I've received callbacks from him and his staff on other issues in the past.)

Update: Contacted my Senators' offices yet again this morning. Under the category of "mixed blessings", Levin has announced that he won't be seeking another term. Unfortunately this also means we have no leverage to make him pay attention.

Looks like we're at least out of the woods on S. 649. Just finished reading it as I didn't realize it was being voted on so soon. I'm glad it got knocked down. Unfortunately, the bill to make concealed carry national probably failed due to all of the gun attention lately. I'd been waiting on that one for a while :-\

I thought Obama's address was pretty unprofessional.

EDIT: Spoke too soon. Looks like majority leader Harry Reid switched his vote to no at the last second in order to earn the right to bring up the measure at a later date.

Gotta thank Stu for summarizing this. When I read the summary the first time, I thought Stu had lost his mind and was misinterpreting the bill. You know a lot of times, bills can lead to speculation and interpretation.

So, before I repost anything or discuss it with anyone, I look to the source for fact. I must have read that section of the bill over 5 or 6 times and whaddaya' know, Stu was right on.

No wonder this bill failed. Just last week, I walked across the street with my neighbors shotgun because my son wanted to shoot one. I don't currently have one so he let me borrow it for a couple of weeks. If this bill had passed, I would have been a criminal. Both of us would have been.

So I guess to make sure I'm not in that position in the future, I need to go shotgun shopping. Once again, the government is becoming the best gun sales organization in the world...

BillyJack....thanks. I got a heads up from our Arizona Citizens Defense League, of which I am a member and so posted it here and on my FB page. They typically don't get into the Federal side of things as the AZ CDL is all about AZ legislation....such as getting Constitutional Carry passed several years ago.

That being said, this past week was crazy with Senate bills flying every which way. I don't think anyone had much of a chance to read anything. The Senate bill that was actually supported and co-drafted by the 2nd Amendment Foundation got blown out of the water....and after reading the Alan's reasoning, I think we (gun owners) lost more than we gained by it being defeated. Oh well...no take backs on these things.
