I've been out of .22LR shotshells for awhile and have been looking to purchase more. I shoot carpenter bees on the wing with them in my .22 revolvers. Those pesky bees drill holes in my porch and the roof of my shed.
Much fun to shoot them in flight with one of my double action Smith .22's.
Can't find the old 50 round boxes of crimped #12 shot anywhere. Found some 20 round boxes of CCI the the gun show but they wanted $6.59 a box. I'm not paying $0.32 a shot for them. Guess i'll just buy a can of RAID and nuke "em" when they invade my abode.

Jees, thought I was the only one that has a good time blowing up those pesky buggers. Also use a tennis racket, cheeper and almost as much fun.

Raid ?

Hey guys I tell you what I have been using, I found a electric fly swatter tennis racket deal.
Probably not as fun as shooting them , but very satisfying when you hit them and they sizzle !
great fun and recreation on my deck !!

Skip the can of Raid, and think of it this way.............it's good practice for trigger control, hand/eye coordination, and it saves damage to your humble abode, not to mention the fun factor. Buy in bulk, save what you can, and blow those little buggers into confetti. It's the right thing to do! ;)

I was at Cabela's a few weeks back and for the first time in MANY years I saw both Federal and Winchester "Bird Shot" shotshells on the shelf. I bought a few boxes of each and in retrospect I should have bought more. I'm guessing if they were at Cabela's the other big stores also got deliveries. They were $9.99/50 rounds which is much better than the price of the CCI shotshells that come 20 in a box for ~$8.50.

How do they work out of an old bolt-action rifle? I have a Mossberg 340 KC with a ridiculously long barrel.

They work OK. I use them in a bolt action Remington .22 rifle to keep the chipmunk population down.

Some of us reload .38 for bees. It's got to be cheaper than .22 birdshot.

I have an old Taurus .38 (a copy of a .38 M&P) that has seen extensive combat against carpenter bees. :D

While I agree it would be fun to shoot them with handgun shotshells, my sister in law gave me one of those "electric tennis raquets" and they work great. You hit a wasp or yellow jacket with one and it sounds just about like a pistol shot....

I use it indoors, where I cannot shoot my handgun.

It works great.

I have an old (some time in the '30s) Remington single-shot smooth bore bolt action (don't remember the model number right now, possibly a 504) that has been in the family since it was new. We always called it the spread-shot gun. It was specifically made for shooting the crimped .22 shot loads, and works quite well. My Mom used it for shooting starlings around the house when she was a kid (try doing that now), and it was reportedly quite effective. I haven't shot any of those rounds through rifled guns, I'm guessing they would spread the pattern a lot faster than a smooth bore. I've got several boxes of .22 shot cartridges, I guess I better buy some more while I can! BTW, that little gun is still almost like new.

Not much of a pattern..due to the rifling, just swirls around and no way to really get a consistent pattern on those.
