gun advice

I would love to have both. I have to sell my wife on the idea.

Do what I did with a new Model 60 no dash I wanted back in the 80's, buy the Model 19-3 and tell her it's her gun... With mild .38 Spl. rounds she will love shooting it and will buy into the whole idea. Just don't plan on having much say about ever selling it, etc.

Welcome to the FORUM! YOU have to make the decision!
BUT...... in Ohio, there are always 1911's for sale. 19's, not too often from what I see. They are usually overpriced. Let us know how you make out. Bob

Get the 19-3.
I just bought one for 500 including a huge lockable hard case.
Why? The S&W Model 19 is a classic Law Enforcement sidearm.
It will only appreciate in price.
And it will serve gallantly as a house protection bedroom gun.
You will also regret this for many, many years,,,,if you do not get it !!!!!

Buy the 19-3 and keep the 45 acp.
Every shooter should have a 357 magnum and 45 acp , the're used for different things.
You have more than ONE pair of shoes right !

Just do it, deal with her when/if needed. I've been in the dog house for a bit over gun purchases and then when I thought I would be she simply said "Oh, I like that". So it all depends on their mood when they find out. Also "its a Christmas gift from you to me" could also be used.

Also guns are NEVER a bad investment and after Tuesday...you might not have that luxury.

I think the advise to buy the 19 now because they don't make them anymore is good. Some people complain the K frame .357s don't hold up but that hasn't been by experience. I bought my 19-2 in 1963 and for several years I shot 3 or 4 boxes of reloads ( at the time I was young and thought hotter was better than accuracy) every Saturday at the base range. I haven't had any problems but then again I don't shoot the hot reloaded stuff anymore and don't shoot 125 grain bullets. I still own that pistol, paid $92.00 at the Wheelus Rod and Gun Club. A lot of money for an Airman 2ed class that made a little over $100.00 a month.

Buy the 19... period. They make .45 1911's every day all day. I have a 1911 Commander, great gun. I have 2 19's and a 66... better guns.

$500 is a good deal.

The 19-3 was the next to last last pinned & recessed version. You didn't mention what barrel length it has and the only track I have is for the snubbie. The Blue Book shows "Add $9 for 4 in. or $14 for 6 in. (disc. 1996) barrel." Snubbies seem to command higher prices these days. With all that in mind, here's my track:

Smith & Wesson 19, 2-1/2 inch barrel.
Revolver in .357 Mag. Blue Book of Gun Values (36th Edition) indicates between $325 in 95% condition and $650 in 100% condition for this gun. I have 127 recorded prices for this model gun from $395 to $1055 over a period of 6 Yrs 5 Mos ending September 7, 2016. The average price as of that date was $619. No refurbs, no refinishes, regular sights. All represented as 95% or better. No distinction for engineering revision, if any, no special editions, no distinctions for box, papers, tools. Current or last MSRP is $457. The last 10 prices I have for this model since 12/19/2015 range from $594 to $825 averaging $670.

The data I have suggests that 68% of the sales were from $501 through $737. You can see that $500 is at the lower end of that range.

I have a 19-5. They are real nice revolver.

So, the average used price is still going up. If you get beat up to sell it, you won't lose anything, in my opinion. May even gain some.

IMHO, M 19's hold up just fine with extended "NORMAL' usage. Get 38 spec. "mid-range" lighter bullets for which the wife to practice. You practice with run of the mill 158 gr. .38 Spec. End each practice session with one cylinder of self defense level .357 Mags. With proper cleaning, care and maintenance your grand children will be doing the same sometime in the future. ........

Welcome from Virginia;

As they say in the market......buy.....buy....buy (the m19 that is).

Pic is my 19-3, 6" shiny thing.....I MIGHT consider letting the grips go for $505 but the whole gun????? NooooooWay...

Keep the 45 cause you're going to need it to keep other forum members away from your place if you close that deal at $505..I am herewith putting in first dibs at $510.00 out the door!

Welcome to the forum again.....and RUN, don't walk to get that 19 at that price.

Take the wife to dinner. Pull out a home made sandwich and chips, and tell her you're going to bring a sack lunch to restaurants until you've saved $500 for a model 19. She might cave in after that. If not, you should have the $500 within a year.

Either way, buy a 19, don't sell anything.
