Gun Definitions - Cultural Interpretations and Definitions of the Gun!!!!!!!

also worth mentioning is the magpie/ tomcat gun this gun is related to the good neighbor gun , but is capable of firing cb caps to eliminate nuisance animals, such as the neighbors' tom cat without raising suspicion or alarming your sleeping wife
an example might be a stevens model 35 tip up ...
sorry- dont know how to add pics :(

The Pimp-Daddy gun. This wide ranging catagory has at least two time frames. The Vintage PDG (Pre 70s) was often a small caliber , short barrel , nickel plated J frame with mandatory Mop or Faux MOP grips . Gold plating on hammers and triggers not unheard of. Possibly a fitz trigger guard and a sharpened front sight. Carried compleatly concealed but could be displayed with lightning speed.
The PDG Nouveau is a largely different animal. Usually transformed to impress with style before function the trend is toward large ,hi-cap semi autos. Complete coverage gold plating is common but function testing and internal cleaning is not. The only real requirement is it must function when held sideways. With a nod toward tradition and a touch of vulger taste fake pearl grips still abound. No longer a need to conceal it is usuall worn openly stuck in a waistband .
Not truly related it is often grouped with the GANGSTA gun which is really nothing more than a THROW DOWN or EVIDENCE GUN with liberal amounts of bling attached.

Range Gun

Any one of a multitude of handguns from " The Good Neighbor Handgun " on up to the " HandCannon* "

Must be Highly Accurate ( ego thing )
No more than six shot capacity
No hand dipped cartridges allowed ( safety thing )
Most preferable handguns from lower end of spectrum
Bug (backup gun )
GG ( gator gun )
TG ( tractor gun )
BG ( boat gun )
~ etc.~
No bipods allowed

* Blowing the shooting glasses off of a fellow ranger, 3 booths down,
from muzzle blast, generally constitutes a quick escort out the door
by range master.

* Range time may be very limited

* Survival Kits excluded

How about Sentimental Favorite Gun?
That would be the first one. For me, as I'm sure it is for a lot of you here, it's a single-shot .22 rifle. Mine was my Maternal Grandfathers. He died just before my 4th birthday, so I don't remember him, but I'll always treasure that rifle.:)

Then there's the I Really Needed It That Dark Night Gun.
Mine is my M696 S&W .44 Special. Never fired a shot, but just about made a late night prowler wet his pants.

OP, I would like to respectfully ask that you add the "Bubba Gun". The "Bubba Gun" started life as a really good piece, but in an effort to "make it better", it became something other than what it was intended. Hence the phrase, "Man, he has really Bubba'd up that gun!"
A "Bubba Gun" might look something like this.
IMAG0013.jpg

"Hey, hold my beer and watch while I get my gun outta the truck!"

"Bar" gun -- (not "bear" gun, although I know that the word "bear" is often pronounced "bar" in the South as in "there I was at the convenience store with a Nehi soda and a Moonpie when a big ole black bar ambled into the store and eyed my Moonpie")

A bar gun is what one carries into bars in rough neighborhoods -- it must be concealable, desirable calibers are .25 ACP or .32 ACP since the bar gun is for "display" to a perceived threat, must be very shiny, with either faux ivory or mother of pearl grips, and able to withstand spilled beer and cheap lipstick, and it is imperative that a bar gun cost less than $200. Bar guns are not intended for actual use but are intended for "flashing" to a potential rival for the affections of the blonde at the end of the bar -- flashing will establish that you are a sophisticated "ladie's man" as you sip your Courvoisier cognac.:D

Tradition in most drinking establishments is that bar guns should have unreliable safety's -- this enhances the "display" or "flashing" experience if the bar gun accidentally discharges into the floor or into the big mirror behind the bartender. Given the penchant for unreliable safety's, this is why desired bar guns are in .25 or .32 caliber -- in the event that one accidentally discharges one's bar gun into one's crotch, the damage inflicted is much less than if one were carrying a .38 +P or .44 Special.

Good description, COL, of what used to be known as a "Saturday Night Special" here in the South. And, not to quibble with its need to be shiny, a very common variant has (with props to Ronnie Van Zant of Lynrd Skynrd) "a barrel that's blue and cold, ain't good for nothin', but put a man six feet in a hole." :D

How about the "CTG Gun" ? It encompasses all frame sizes and calibers, all pre-Model Number guns and is usually acquired as an inheritance or because someone found it and wanted it out of the house.

Zip Gun

Also referred to as an improvised firearm. A gun built by someone, usually in their garage, using readily available materials. They are mostly seen in the .22 caliber variety. They are illegal. Zip guns were made popular by gangs in the 1950’s although they are not exclusionary to gangs. Insurgents and partisans in many countries made and used this type of weapon during WWII and later.

Two more definitions added this morning.

Keep those definitions and cultural interpretations coming in!

coffee table gun

I humbly present the "Coffee Table Gun". No particular model or caliber. Any of the guns in one's collection rotated on a daily or weekly basis. Kept on the coffee table within easy reach just like the TV remote. Used in the event of a home invasion or disagreement over control of said remote.

The "Go-to-Gun"; the one you grab when your daughter says, Daddy there is somebody looking in my window. Could be several of the previous mentioned ones, but usually ends up as the "evidence gun".

29) Coffee Table Gun. (l. capulus mensam tormentarii) - a gun of no particular model or caliber. Any of the guns in one's collection rotated on a daily or weekly basis. Kept within easy reach on the coffee table, like the TV remote. Used in the event of a home invasion or other such interruption of your normally scheduled programming.

New addition!

Number 30

30) CTG Gun (l.CTG tormentarii ) –a gun of which encompasses all frame sizes and calibers, all pre-Model Number guns and is usually acquired as an inheritance, found in an attic trunk or box, wrapped in a sock at the back of a recently deceased relative or acquaintance or because someone found it and wanted it out of the house. A new definition.

31) Signaling Device/Gun (l. significantes tormentarii) - a large caliber gun, with loud report to signal to neer-do-wells, malcontents, reprobates, miscreants, malingerers, etc. that the posessor of such "signaling device", upon report from same device is, indeed aware of their presence in the immediate area. This device has been used successfully to alter the intent of said neer-do-well given the proximity of signaler to current position of malingerer.(Credit:Bill)

Hi all... Added some updates to the definitions and included the "Pimp Daddy Gun" to the list. Enjoy.
