Is there a favorite type of metal/gun polish? Or does any metal polish work just fine.?

I hear good things about Flitz polish. I use it on snake bores to polish the ramp and barrel.

if i were to polish the outside of a barrel. so to take it from that matte black to a different level of shine. doesnt need to be a mirror finish...can you even do that ?

really want to get into a lot more of the customizing stuff for guns in general, but it seems very hard to find things with options etc. i just wanna play around and see what can and cant be done.

FLITZ def seems to be the most common answer

Don't confuse Flitz Metal Polish which is a fine preservative for guns with Flitz Metal Cleaner which is abrasive , good for cleaning but will remove blueing.
The metal cleaner is blue in color and the polish is white.

so...if i want to go from matte black to all shiny, i would use???

Not sure you want to remove the matte black from an M&P pistol barrel!

That black finish is an expensive coating like cerakote that preserves the steel and has natural lubricity.

i do understand that...im looking at a bigger picture. so if i were to do this it would be as an experiment. im not gonna run out and throw it in my gun etc. just trying to find a starting point and go from there. im sure i will ruin whatever it is i start with....but thats how ya learn

Look in your auto clean kit. Some Mother's mag polish works just fine, especially if you already own some.

Other brands work too.

What are you trying to accomplish? My recommendation is if you are not an experienced metal finisher, work by hand with some micro-fibre cloths.

It takes experience to use machines to polish - ask someone who details cars.

I used mothers polish and a scotch brite pad with the soap washed out on mine. YouTube it.

Now that is a point worth considering.

If you polish a carbon barrel, you are creating a haven for rust.

I know a mostly non-shooter or two who polish stainless barrels on 1911s, but polish in my experience is largely limited to collectors.

Is the barrel stainless or carbon steel? Like others have said, if you remove the coating on carbon steel it will rust pretty quick, but stainless would be fine.

yeah i dont really want to give up the whole idea of how or why or what i want to just yet...just because its something i have never seen and id hate to give away the 1 million dollar idea!! lol

but thank for the info that you have shared. good to know the difference between the stainless or the carbon. that would have sucked to learn the hard way!

the barrels are stainless. i wouldn't worry about rust.
