I have a '58 Mod. 18, and would like to keep it in a nice gun rug. Does anyone know offhand what size it would take? It has the old "diamond Target grips on it so it's a little longer than normal. Thanks, TJ

Measure the entire length of you gun and purchase one in that length or possible a bit larger. Midway USA has a few I prefer the Bob Allen for the longer guns.

The NRA accessory shop has some very nice ones

I would not store the gun long term in a rug, they tend to attract and hold moisture and will often lead to corrosion. I do store some guns in rugs but wipe them down with Breakfree or wax them then put them inside a Zip-lock storage bag and then into the rug.

I use Bore-Stores to store my revolvers. If you want a nice soft case to carry to the range, how about the real McCoy from S&W:

Available from the S&W online store.

13" L x 7" H

TJ - here's a M18 with target grips in a properly sized rug.

The overall length of the rug is roughly 13 inches, and the height is about 7 inches. This one is marked M (medium), but many aren't size-marked at all. If possible, it's best to take your gun along to insure a proper fit.

I've managed to pick up different sized rugs along the way here and there. I know at Bass Pro shop they have a display with all different sizes. I have one of the nice Smith & Wesson rugs for my 6" 686.

Everyone has their own idea, but I like mine in a bore-stores and then a Rug large enough to hold the gun in the bore-stores kind of the best of both worlds.

Same here. Wax em up and bag them before going in the rug.

whether I polish them with wax or not, they all get a final coat of oil and then I wrap them in wax paper & slip them in the rug...I can fit a lot more in the safe w/ rugs and I don't like to trust the boxes w/ foam if I can help it (let the foam get wet just once & not see it, then stowe a blue gun in it - you'll see where I'm comin' from)...anyway, I've used the rugs with much success for nearly the past quarter-century with no complaints (only that the rugs were a lot better quality in the late 80s and early 90's compared to those of today, but they did cost more)...

that's my two cents...

Happy Thanksgiving every body!!

I use bore stores for the handguns because that way I can stack them.

But, the whole house is air-conditioned (humidity controlled) and I don't live near an ocean.

The safes have goldenrods in them and I'm pretty good about wiping things down or even waxing with renaissance wax for longer term storage.

Even so I'd be afraid to use traditional vinyl or leather gun rugs because they could trap and hold moisture.

I saw nickel Python that was inherited by a friend ruined by being stored in a holster for 10 years. It was corroded even though it was a in a dry drawer the whole time. It was obvious that the leather had wicked and retained whatever moisture there was and held it in contact with the Python. Really sad turn of events, but a good lesson for me.

I think the problem with corrosion on a gun in a holster is from the HIGH acidity of the leather, which is attacking the metal, not from moisture.

I've stored my revolvers in canvass or loose weave fabric rugs with feaux fleece liners for 20+ years and no rust issues.

Depends on the rug. If it breathes and has inert liners, no issues, leather or air tight PVC - yer on yer own.

I've had no problem keeping mine in rugs -- here in humid Georgia -- without any special treatment. Then again, I have all of my guns in regular rotation and I fire each of them often. Each gun gets wiped down with an oily cloth before being put back to bed.

I've purchased a few from Smith & Wesson. They're nice but a bit pricey. Lately, I've been buying from Midway. They usually have something perfectly adequate on special in the $5.99 range + or - a buck or two. Their medium size rugs will carry a revolver with a 4" barrel or smaller. Their large rugs work well for revolver with 6" barrels.

I recommend a 12" Boyt.Suits my 18 with Spegels and my 4 inch 19 with targets, just fine.I give the guns a light wipe down with an oiled tissue before putting them away-never a problem with rust, etc.

From what little I know, part of the holster issue has to do with the residual tannic acids.
