The County Sheriff had a basic gun safety class night in a town nearby and more than 450 people showed up. They are having to add several more range dates to handle the hands on part of the class.

Is the class required? I can't comprehend why so many would go unless required. Or is the class provided free with purchase?

Why wouldn't someone want to go? As far as I am concerned, everyone, including non-owners of firearms, ought to seek out a gun safety course of some kind, even if it is simply a cursory course. Maybe this would help reduce some of the paranoia we see concerning firearm ownership. There is no downside to it.

Because most people have a life.

What he said, couldn't agree more. I'm lucky to live in a state with constitutional carry, but the one downside is that you see some people with weapons who clearly know less than nothing about what they have strapped to their body in the cheapest P.O.S. holster they can find.

I personally am a huge proponent of mandatory training. Just like we have laws to compel stupid people to do certain things that are common sense to others in the interests of public safety, these same stupid people are at times a risk to themselves and others every time they touch a firearm.

Just think about some of the Walmartians you see bumbling around the produce aisle... then strap a .45 to their hip and see how much more secure you feel. ;)

I assist with teaching the NRA Basic Pistol Classes in two different venues. Classes are booked solid with waiting lists as far in advance as we accept registrations. Some are new shooters, some are folks who have been shooting for years but want an update on handguns. I don't understand why Gamecock seems to ridicule the idea that more and more people want to be educated about firearms. I think it's a very good thing as it adds educated and responsible people to the roster of people who will vote to protect our rights under the Second Amendment. Increasing knowledge of gun safety is not a bad thing either.

I can't comprehend why so many would go unless required.

Perhaps for the same reason that anyone takes lessons/classes in their chosen sport/hobby - To learn it, understand it, and become proficient at it. Add the incredible responsibility of walking around armed and I'd have to question the wisdom of any newbie who thinks they don't need at least a modicum of training.

The class was free, was not mandatory. They had to move it from the normal classroom to a larger facility. I saw many couples there, and I carried my wife so she would be exposed to another point of view than my own, especially on safety issues. I also want her to shoot under the watchful eye of another instructor.

I'm concerned about 'a serious public inconvenience and loss.' - Federalist 29

So, if the Sheriff organized a free and voluntary basic gun safety class, and a lot of people showed up, I'm fine with that. Too bad our public schools don't teach basic gun safety.

I have to admit I have no idea what this means... can you explain?

The Founding Fathers warned against requiring firearms training for the people. See Federalist 28 and 29.

I was surprised at the turnout given by the OP, so much so that I wondered if it were coerced. He has said it wasn't, so I'm cool with it.

While I don't think training should be "forced" I do feel it should be offered in schools. At least a "safety" class.....at what age do kids need to realize what NOT to do?
The schools/ government are deciding everything else, how about something that is common sense?
I also think that when we decide we know enough we don't need any more training, is when we open up our selves to real trouble.

While I agree that it should not be required or cost a lot, I would say this is a good thing. A lot of folks buying their first gun and being responsible citizens, they put in the time and effort to learn how to safely use it. There needs to be a thumbs up emoji...:D

I'm a member of 2 different shooting organizations/ranges here in Arizona, and last Saturday I took a newbie out to shoot and get him further hooked on defending our Second Amendment rights... ;)

We went to both clubs and there was over a 2 hour wait for a lane at each club! The places were absolutely packed, and you could tell a lot of folks who were milling around were there to shoot for the first time. While I wasn't thrilled about not getting to shoot, I loved the fact that so many people are getting into the sport and buying guns. I'm happy to give up a couple hours at the range if it means more support for our right to keep and bear arms! :D

Same here in MA. Our club's NRA Basic Pistol course is booked through March and membership applications are through the roof.

I think its great. While I can not support making people have a class or certificate to excise a right guaranteed by the Constitution, I can see huge benefits in having people educated in gun safety. Those who mishandle guns through ignorance endanger both lives and our right.

I am 64 years old and have been shooting since I was a child and handguns from the time I was 16. I paid and went to the NRA basic handgun course, I don't think I know everything and figured I would learn something and the certificate might come in handy someday. I did learn about the more modern semi autos, decockers etc. I don't own one but, I may come across one or someone with one.

I definitely believe that mandatory firearms safety classes in schools would save more lives than the recent executive what ever it was.

Safety is one subject where it never hurts to repeat multiple times ..

We all think we're safe but how many of us have had a Negligent Discharge ?? That only shows it is one subject that's needs to be repeatedly drilled in our heads ..

So never hurts to take one more class ..

I have been lucky .. shooting since I was in my early teens and in my late 60's now and I haven't had one .. KNOCK ON WOOD !!!!
