Gun shop find, 686 3''

The gunshops near me only sell new stuff. The pawn shops sell crap. Nothing like this. Very nice.

I just love the simplicity, reliability and quality, much like you do. I know most others here are appreciative of it as well.

At first I was thinking I made a mistake by buying it, after all the comments Im very glad I did and now almost afraid to shoot it, but Im sure I'll get over that part.

Thank you all.

Ohhh la la! I would have instantly dropped the money for it. In fact if I ever see one like it I will pony up. Nice find!

Very nice looking piece, I think you did just fine on it. You can bet that you won't ever lose money on it.
Can't wait to hear how it shoots!

Thanks all... planning a shoot at lunch today but may end up taking my elderly mother to the Dr. She has COPD.

If you smoke, stop. If you don't, never start.

That is a beautiful wheel gun. I have a 2.5" 686-4 and LOVE it, but a 3" is on my wish list. One day, I want a 3" CS-1, but then again... don't we all?

I love three inch K/L frames. I have a 3 inch CS-1, a Three inch 66-2, a 65-2 and a 65-5. I am still looking for a 64 three inch.......

Nice find and well worth the money. I have a 3 inch CS-1 that is a great shooter. 3 Inch barrels are beginning to be my favorite length. I guess its because its long enough to have good accuracy, short enough to conceal easily and they just look mean. I have 2 unfluted 629s. a 686 like yours would compliment them really well.

Realy nice gun!

That non-fluted cylinder looks great on that gun.

Another pic. Some people are telling me its a limited run? The box label does say Spec. Ord. 0229 ? ...

Oh, yeah! Very limited. I got its cousin, a five inch unfluted, bright finish, and I love it. There've been a few "limited runs" of those. This is the first I've heard of an unfluted three-incher. The good news is that you'll be able to find a holster for it. (I'm still trying to be happy with one made for a 6" L frame, not wanting to spring the big bucks and long wait for a custom job.)

0229 means the (229)th day of 200(0). S&W's method of dating the ready to ship date if I remember correctly. For all practical purposes, the gun was finished in production on that date.

Anyone else on the forum have one of these? I'm as hardcore a S&W 357 collector as you will find and I have not seen such a gun before.

Thanks guys, I appreciate all the input. I had no idea it was a rare find andnow I'm very glad I picked it up.

Range report coming next week...

Me too!

I found mine in a local gunshop about 3 years ago, ANIB with all for $500. It is product code 149137, serial number CDJ6XXX, spec. order 0229. I thought it was on the rare side as I hadn't seen one before or since until SC_Mike posted his. I guess I'll keep it for a while.

Very cool, same numbers as mine... How does your shoot?

Nothing bad to say about it.

SC_Mike, mine shoots better than I do. With the added weight of the 3 inch full lug and the unfluted cylinder, the recoil is very manageable with all 357 mag loads. I like the full length ejector rod with the 3 inch barrel and the empties don't stick. The extra shot with the 7 hole cylinder isn't too bad either. In all, it handles like a much longer barrel. I know you will love yours.

Thanks for the input ishootblanks. I shot a quick box of .38 and .357 and it felt sharp but manageable. Wed I think I will go for the targets and see how accurate I can make it.

Thanks again, Mike.

Years ago I had one of the 3" 686 Customs Service over run pistols and it was a sweet shooter! Sorry to say I had to part with it and wish I had that one back! Good shooting with your new 3" 686!

Very nice. Personally, I would send it to the factory and have a fluted cylinder installed, as I am not a fan of unfluted cylinders. However, many are, and many would say leave it "stock" to preserve value. It would be a carry gun and shooter for me, so I would not care about the value.
