Gun signs on front door: deterrent or target?

I think the vast majority of people who "see" them, never actually "see" them. They're just signs and I doubt anyone worries about them one way or the other. I doubt they'd stop anyone from breaking into your home or car, and I don't think anyone would see them and think "Oh good. They've got a gun. I'll break in and steal it."

It's a sign. Anybody can buy one. They mean nothing at all.

If I were a police officer or prosecuting attorney and I saw one of you signs I would think you were premeditating a shooting. I like many others here don't want to advertise we own guns. Why invite trouble and risk a break in when your not home.

I don't do it. I don't even put a NRA sticker on my truck. I don't want advertise to any one that I have a gun. Don

Right on, no NRA, gun club or anything else that says HEY this car/truck might have guns or other expensive sporting goods in it. Parked in a driveway or if front of your house same thing. I also make it a point not to advertise the fact I just bought new audio or visual equipment or other expensive baubles by destroying the boxes they come in. It's quite obvious just drive by and look what's at the curb on trash pickup day. When we worked we were gone from our house for at least 10 hours each work day so I want my house/ car not to advertise we have toys and probably are not home!

Of course where I now live (retired & out a ways in the boonies) just about everybody has guns, ATVs snowmobiles & jet skies. We hardly have any problems as I said its well know that most all here hunt and have guns.

yeah, but.

We had a break in last December, just before the LAPD gun buy back program? since then we have an alarm system in the house, and alarm signs and stickers in the windows.

That tells the burglar the house is wired and not easy to burgle when we are not at home.

To have a sign advertising guns inside and premeditation to shoot, is not what I would do. Besides when they see the cars gone from the house, and no one home, the guns and or ammo is left unattended and up for grabs!

I would pass on the gun signs;)

Not me NO NRA (or other) ads-
An *Alarm Company* sign and decals wouldn't be a bad idea though.....

Deterrent to break ins?

I have always though that a tape/CD hooked up to a noise activated switch with the sound of a couple of Doberman/ Rottweilers barking aggressively which would run a couple of minuets (and then start again if reactivated) would be a very good deterrent to a brake ins. Perhaps with speakers in more than one room.

I wouldn't think you would need a "Beware of Dog" sign with this. Nothing like the element of suprise.

I would NEVER post a sign indicating I have a firearm. That said, I do have one on the front and back door that says "I don't call 911" - there's a picture of a German Shepherd on it. It has been "noted" by a least two door-to-door "sales" types already (or maybe guys casing the place?)

The last guy looked at the dog (she's 85 pounds and ALWAYS goes to the door with me) and asked if the dog bites. I told him he needed to ask the dog. At that point he slowly backed away from the door and wished me a nice day - love that dog. :)

No signs. No stickers. No tee shirts. No hats. I think the only thing that gives me away and only people who know are my 5.11 concealment shirts and they look like Tommy Bahama. I prefer to keep it all quiet.

I have a friend that lives in rural central Texas. His house is 3/4 of a mile off the paved road and is not visible from the road. As you go through the first gate to his property there is a sign that reads... There is nothing in here worth your life. A half mile down the road you go through another gate and there is a sign posted that reads... If you can read this sign you are within range.

Do the signs deter folks up to no good? No, not any more than signs that read Posted No Hunting. In his situation do the signs make him a bigger target than he already is? Probably not. Do the signs turn back people out exploring on private property? Yes.

The signs also make for a conversation opener for a first time visitor,

I have a sign like that but its in my office as a smile maker for friends who visit.

In our neighborHOOD you don't even put out boxes from purchases like TVs, stereos, computers, etc.. That's just as much of an invitation to come break in. All boxes get cut up into smaller pieces and put out in black plastic bags on trash day.
