So i snagged a 629-5 6" off Gunbroker for the going rate. This one looked a bit lonely and had been on there for a bit. Looked like it needed inducted into my halfway house for wayward 629s.

Seller was an established gun range with good ratings. Took the plunge even though they failed to respond to an online inquiry. No telltale signs for concern and I have yet to pick up a -5 or -4 that was out of time, poor barrel alignment, or questionable quality control.

Picked it up at the FFL yesterday. First comment from the receiver was the packing was less than stellar. Adequate, barely yes. Wrapped in brown paper and put in a UPS box. Luckily it arrived w/o incident. Fit/finish were as expected. Locked up good. A bit dirty and the barrel was filthy. Looked like someone shot some lead and didn't clean it after. Was a bit worrisome but no indication of rust, etc. Why anyone would ship a revolver in this condition is debatable when it only takes a few minutes to do a rudimentary cleaning.

The good news is it cleaned right up. Bore looked like new.
Typical stock 629, heavy springs and tight. Like a lot of 44 mags, I think people buy them, shoot a cylinder or two, then put it away and never used. Bone dry on the inside, which looked like most do when coming straight from the factory.

Gotta love a Smith. After a complete breakdown, cleaning, lubing, a little polishing, and spring kit, it's ready to roll. Action is smooth and DA is around 9lbs. SA averages 3.3 lbs. Debating which sights to put on it.

Did you buy a range rental gun without sights?

No range gun.. I could tell it had a very low round count.

It came with the standard red ramp and w/o rear sights. Typically prefer fiberoptic or tritium sights depending on application.

I have had 4 guns come with damaged rear sights from dealer packing. I insist on a hard case.

Also, if I ask you a question, and get no answer, they get no bid. I hate it when you get the I am busy routine. That is why there is a 10 o'clock at night. If you are going to sell online, support your customers!

Glad it worked out for you. 629's are a nice gun

The other thing that's frustrating is when a seller says no shipping to NY or CA. When asked they have no answer. I have an FFL . Plenty of firearms have been shipped to my front door in NY. It's not different than shipping to TX or FL.

Seems pretty standard to me

I have to retract my recommendation of the wilson spring kit. Coil springs are fine but twice now the hammer spring is either too tight on the stirrup and/or just doesn't fit right. Wilson will replace these if you contact them if returned, but twice in recent purchases is just poor quality.

It's different for CA.

Here's the answer if you're shipping to CA.

If you receive firearms, you must be listed on either the Centralized List of Firearms Dealers (CLFD) pursuant to Penal Code section 26715, or the Centralized List of Exempted Federal Firearms Licensees (CLEFFL) pursuant to Penal Code section 28450. Anytime you receive a firearm from an FFL (regardless of whether the other FFL is located within or outside of California) a Firearms Shipment Approval number from the FFL shipper must be included with the firearm. When you ship/transfer a firearm to another California FFL, you must obtain a Firearms Shipment Approval number from DOJ. To obtain Firearms Shipment Approval numbers, you must enroll in the CFLC program. (Pen. Code, §§ 27555, 28450, and 28470.)
