so, the wife goes outta town...i buy two Lee Enfields at Joes going out of business sale. so, i must have been drunk one nite and bid on a Mauser k98 on GB. i have been sweating it out for the last week. never have i been so happy to be outbid at the last minute. the wife was receptive to the Enfields (the first on anyway)...the $350 + S&H Mauser had me worried.

I'm sure alot of us have auction stories where we learned the hard way.
A couple years ago I saw a brand new listing on Auction Arms for a Model 17-6. I liked it, but didn't need it. Already had several .22 handguns including a nice standard Model 17. And I sure didn't need to be spending the money right then.
For some unknown reason I put in the opening bid amount knowing full well someone would out bid me.
Seven days later the auction ended and I was the only bidder. Oops!

I had to do some quick financial re-arranging and delay some other planned purchases, but I kept my end of the deal.
But it really is a nice gun.

Ditto. Only difference was my mistake was with a Model 34-1 RB nickel NIB. Did not need it, but thought I would do the nice thing and put in a bid of $299 to get the ball rolling on this AA auction. Low and behold I was the only bidder and had to pony up #324 to honor my bid + shipping. Nice shooter, but really did not need another 22. Good part about the deal was I owned it for a few months and sold it to a friend who uses it to shoot tree rats off the bird feeder on his back deck.

[thread drift]

I did that on eBay once, with a computer. I had bid what I thought was a good price, BestBuy's ad came out with a better price on a better computer. Fortunately, I was outbid in the last few minutes.

A very good friend of mine found himself caught up in unwise bidding. Most of the time someone came along to outbid him. He did a lot of sweating. He got stuck a few times with items he did not really want.

Have put in bids that were too high and lost them anyway. Have put in an opening bid just to get things started and wound up winning the auction. Got a very nice 629-1 4" in wooden case that way. It averages.

Shouldn't this be in the "dumb things I have done drunk" thread?

Let's see......drunk bidding has gotten me:
A BSS that I didn't need but at a good price
A SBE II that I didn't need but at a great proce
A 9.5" Super Redhawk with a 2x scope that I REALLY have no use for but got it at a great price.
A pristine 3.5" 27 that I DID need at a really good price.(this was actually drunk Hurricane bidding)
The rest of them I was sober.

When you say Lee-Enfields, would those be No. 1s or No. 4s, or some other No. / Mark?

What kind of price did you pay?

Was at an American Legion baseball banquet, went around at a silent aution putting some small, introductory bids on some autographed baseballs. I checked my bids about an hour later--I was the only one on alot of the sheets. I said to my wife, I think I might be taking home some baseballs. And I didn't even have enough money! I must of got about 5; can't remember the dollar amount, $100-125 maybe. Not so bad; but, you can get caught.
